The Missouri Southern men's basketball team tied a school record with 15 three-pointers and Marquis Addison went over 1,500 points in his career as the Missouri Southern men's basketball team took out visiting Southwest Baptist 113-83 tonight.
The Lions (18-5, 12-4 MIAA) move into third place by themselves in the MIAA as Fort Hays lost to Washburn tonight, 79-70. Southern had six players score in double-figures led by 33 points from Marquis Addison, one off of his career high. Addison went 12-16 from the field, 4-7 from long range and 5-7 from the free-throw line.
Jordan Talbert scored 16 and pulled down nine boards, while Greg Renfroe and Blaine Miller scored 13 points each. The 13 from Miller is a career-high. Austin Wright scored 11, while Cameron Cornelius had ten points and eight rebounds.
Southwest Baptist (13-12, 6-10 MIAA) was led in scoring by 25 points from Desi Barmore as three Bearcats scored in double-figures.
Both teams traded points for most of the first half, as there were four ties and six lead changes throughout. A three from Talbert with 3:18 left made the score 41-36 and sparked a 10-2 run by the Lions that put Southern up ten (48-38) with 2:10 to go. The Lions took an 11 point lead into the locker room after a three from Miller as time wound down in the half.
Southern started the half on a 21-7 run and pushed its lead to 27 (77-50) after a three from Talbert with 14:47 left to go. A three from Wright made the score 91-56 with ten minutes left, giving the Lions a 35 point lead, the highest of the game.
Southern shot 61 percent from the field and 71 percent from long range, making 15-21 three pointers, tying a school record set in 2003 against St. Gregory's. The Lions forced 14 SBU turnovers and scored 21 points off of the miscues, while holding a 37-30 advantage on the boards.
Addison now has 1,503 points in his career, just 17 from tying Chris Tucker for seventh all-time in career scoring at MSSU. The 113 points is the most scored against SBU in the series between the two schools, topping the previous high mark of 101, done multiple times.
Southern will be back in action this Saturday as the Lions finish out the home portion of their regular-season schedule, playing host to Pittsburg State in a Sonic Trophy Series game. It will be the final regular-season home game for coach Robert Corn, as well as the five seniors on the team (Addison, Talbert, Matt Everson, Slim Mageeand Bryan Adams)
