Dominique Mosley leads MSSU women past Southwest Baptist 70-56

Nearly getting a double-doube from senior forward Dominique Mosley, the Missouri Southern women's basketball team used her strong performance combined with solid free throw shooting down the stretch to power past the Southwest Baptist Bearcats 70-56 tonight at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Winning their third straight game, the Chicago native led the Lions (17-6, 11-5 MIAA) with 23 points and nine rebounds finishing 7-of-11 from the field and 9-of-9 from the free throw line. Shawnee Phillips scored a career-high 17 points, hitting three three-pointers and going 6-of-9 from the free throw line. Nicole Hartzog and Alexis Fitzpatrickeach chipped in 10 points, while Fitzpatrick added five assists.  The Lions shot  
The Bearcats (10-13, 5-11) were led in scoring by guard Brook Duncan with 17 points as she finished 8-of-17 from the floor. Jacqui Zelenka added 16 points while Dilonna Johnson chipped in 10 points. Southwest Baptist went 20-of-47 (.426) from the field as a team, but only 2-of-11 (.182) from three-point range after hitting 13-of-22 in their previous meeting earlier this year in Bolivar.
After falling behind 13-7 after the first nine and half minutes of play, the Lions used a quick 6-0 run to tie the game up at 13 apiece getting four points from Mosley and a layup from Jones with 9:23 to play in the first half. After the score was tied three times, the Lions took the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Mosley and extended their lead to seven as they took a 31-24 edge into the break. Southern nearly shot 50% from the field in the first half as they went 14-of-29, but were only 1-of-8 from three-point range. 
After the Bearcats got within two twice in the first two and half minutes of second half, the Lions opened up a 44-34 lead after a Mosley free throw with 15:16 to play, but a 7-0 SBU run brought the Bearcats back to within three at 44-41 with 12:36 left. The Lions went to work from there as they answered back with a 7-0 run of their own as Fitzpatrick hit a jumper, Phillips knocked down a three and Mosley hit a jumper to open up a 51-41 lead. Not going away, Southwest Baptist answered back with another 7-0 run to close it within 51-48 with 5:39 to play, but the Lions again had an answer as they reeled off six straight points to re-take a nine point lead. After the teams traded three-pointers  a pair of free throws cut Southern's lead to seven at 60-53 with 2:40 to play, but the Lions hit 10-of-13 from the line in the final two and half minutes to pull out the 70-56 victory. Six of those free throws were made by Phillips as Mosley hit the other four.
Southern outrebounded the Bearcats 30-29 while edging them in assists 15-9 and steals 8-4. The Lions bench was especially strong as they outscored SBU 50-2.
The Lions return to action on Saturday for their home finale as they play Pittsburg State (20-6, 13-3) at 1 p.m. at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. Saturday also marks Senior Day as Southern will honor Mosley, Shonte Clay,Samantha Soyez and Tee Singleton as they play their final game at home in the green and gold.
