The Missouri Southern men's basketball team went cold from the field in the second-half and a hot-shooting Central Missouri squad, defeated the Lions 97-92 Saturday at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
The Lions (15-5, 9-4 MIAA) were led in scoring by 21 points from Marquis Addison as he went 7-8 from the free-throw line and added four assists and three steals. Slim Magee had 19 points 10 rebounds, going 4-5 from the field and 11-12 from the free-throw line. Jordan Talbert scored 19 points and added eight rebounds and four assists.
Central (19-4, 11-3 MIAA) had four score in double-figures led by 24 points on 10-11 shooting from Dillon Deck. Charles Hammork and Daylen Robinson scored 19 and 17 points, respectively.
The Mules scored the games' opening bucket on a three from Jon Gilliam, but a jumper from Adddison with 14:35 left in the first gave the Lions a 16-15 lead. A quick 8-0 run by the Mules gave Central a seven-point advantage and they led up until 1:08 of the first half when a jumper from Talbert gave the Lions a 42-41 lead. A bucket from Cameron Cornelius with 39 seconds left made the halftime score 44-41, Lions.
Central opened up a 10-point lead (61-51) after a layup from Deck with 13:27 left in the second half. The lead reached 11 (63-52) with 11:42 left and it was 11 again with 4:37 left after a Hammork layup made the score 80-69. The Mules led by ten with just under four minutes left when the Lions began to chip away at the lead. A three from Lane Barlow with 1:29 left made the score 88-83, Central and a three from Addison cut the lead to three (91-88) with just under a minute to go. Southern got to within four (96-92) after a pair of freebies from Addison with ten seconds left, but couldn't get any closer.
Southern shot 45 percent from the field and 83 percent from the free-throw line in the game. The Lions forced 14 Central Missouri turnovers and scored 17 points off of the miscues, while 18 offensive rebounds led to 23 second-chance points for Southern. The Lions' bench outscored Central 29-22 and Southern held a 32-28 advantage on the boards.
The Lions will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 12 when Southern plays host to Northwest Missouri at 7:30 pm.
