Southern women fall to Fort Hays State

Hays, Kan. - The Missouri Southern women's basketball team got career-highs from Layne Skiles and Zoe Campbell, but the Lions couldn't fight off the No. 16 ranked Fort Hays State Tigers and fell on the road, 75-59.

Southern (3-8, 0-3 MIAA) got a career-high in points (13) from Layne Skiles, while Zoe Campbell picked up a career-high four assists in the game. Campbell added eight rebounds. Chasidee Owens had 13 points, while Destiny Cozart had four three-pointers to lead the Lions with 14 points.

Hays (10-2, 1-2 MIAA) was led in scoring by Bell Barbieri and Taylor Rolfs with 13 points each.

The Tigers opened up a 17-6 lead over the Lions, but a quick 6-0 run from Southern, capped by a free throw from Owens with 43 seconds left in the first quarter, got the Lions within five (17-12). A 4-0 run from FHSU, however, gave the Tigers a 21-12 lead after one.








FHSU started the second quarter on a 6-0 run before a layup from Skiles made the score 27-14, Tigers with 6:22 to go in the quarter. The Tigers led 33-14 after a three from Kacey Kennett with 4:02 to go and a jumper for the Tigers pushed the lead to 35-14 with 3:41 on the clock.

A jumper from Skiles cut the Tigers' lead to 13 (35-22) with 2:11 to go in the quarter and despite a three from Cozart with 34 seconds left, the Lions went into the locker room trailing the Tigers 41-25 at the break. Southern had issues with turnovers in the first half as FHSU scored 19 points off of 12 Southern miscues.

The Lions opened the third quarter on an 8-2 run after a layup from Skiles and a three from Amber Buch and forced an FHSU timeout, cutting the Tigers' lead to just ten (43-33). The Tigers, however, pushed their lead back to 16 (49-33) after a layup from Barbieri with 4:38 to go in the quarter. FHSU led 61-41 after three quarters.

A three from Zoe Campbell with 6:45 left in the 4th quarter got the Lions within 15 (65-50), but that would be as close as Southern would get.

The Lions shot 43 percent from the field, bettering the Tigers' 40 percent from the field. Southern out rebounded the Tigers 37-34, but FHSU had 31 points off of 24 Lions' turnovers which was the turning point in the game.

Southern will be back in action Monday night when the Lions travel to Nebraska-Kearney. Tip off is slated for 5:30 pm.
