Late push lifts Nebraska-Kearney to 65-58 win over MSSU women

Kearney, Neb. - The Missouri Southern women's basketball team rallied twice including a 10-0 run, but Nebraska-Kearney was able to score a series of buckets late in the game to seal a 65-58 win Monday night.

Southern (3-9, 0-4 MIAA) was paced by Chasidee Owens, who hit 7-of-11 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line for 18 points. Destiny Cozart also finished with double digit points as she had 17 on the day including 5-of-13 from beyond the arch.

Nebraska-Kearney (12-2, 1-2 MIAA) was led in scoring by Haley Simental, who had 22 points including three treys.








The Lopers opened up a 9-2 lead over the Lions, but a deep three-pointer from Amber Buch closed the gap and pit the pressure on as they were able to close within four, twice. The Lopers used stifling defense in the final minute and a half as they closed out the quarter with an 8-0 run to lead 17-9 after one.

Defense was strong by both teams in the second quarter as neither team hit a field goal until the 6:35 mark. The Lions countered a single free throw with a 10-0 run, including a left side rainbow three-pointer by Destiny Cozart to take a brief lead, 19-18. The Lions outscored the Lopers 14-11 in the quarter and narrowly trailed 28-23 at the half.

MSSU rallied back in the third quarter and held the Lopers scoreless for 4:28. The Lions took a lead a 34-32, but again UNK closed out the stanza with a 9-3 run that included three straight three-pointers to take a 41-37 lead into the final quarter.

In the final quarter, the Lions were outscored early, however, Cozart kept the Lions in the game as she hit three straight three-pointers in the final minute.

The Lions shot 38 percent from the field, bettering the Lopers' 36 percent from the field. The two teams had 41 rebounds each.

Southern will be back in action Thursday night when the Lions host Central Oklahoma. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 pm.
