The 12th-ranked Missouri Southern men's basketball team made 17 three pointers as the Lions defeated Central Oklahoma 95-59 in front of more than 2,000 fans inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Southern (12-2, 5-0 MIAA) won its 24th-straight home game. Elyjah Clark scored 26 points as he went 8-of-13 from long-range, adding in six rebounds. Cam Martin scored 20 points and added 11 rebounds.
UCO (6-9, 3-3 MIAA) was led by 12 points from Dashawn McDowell.
Clark hit three of his first four three point attempts in the first five minutes, the last coming with 14:42 left in the half that gave the Lions a 13-8 lead. Martin hit a three with 12:15 left to give the Lions a 16-14 lead and another three from Clark, this time with 11:40 left on the clock pushed the Southern lead to 19-14.
Another three from Martin, this one with 9:45 on the clock pushed the Lions' lead to 23-14 and a jumper from Martin with nine minutes left made the score 25-14, Southern and pushed the run to 9-0. A layup from Ted Brown gave the Lions a 32-20 lead with 5:54 left in the half, and a pair of free throws from Clark made the lead 20 (42-22) with a minute to go. A three from Tharp with time winding down made the halftime score 45-23, Southern.
A three from Clark, his fifth of the game, gave the Lions a 51-27 lead with 17:45 to go in the second half, while Clark's sixth three with 14:40 to play made it 56-34. Clark's seventh three with 13:25 left made the score 61-36 and forced a UCO timeout.
Clark's eighth three gave the Lions a 66-38 lead with 11:47 left, while a three from Braelon Walker with 10:22 left pushed the score to 71-42, Lions. Another three for Walker with 8:15 to go made the score 74-42, and a three-point play from Christian Bundy gave the Lions an 81-53 lead with 4:15 to go. A bucket from Aleksa Markovic proved the final points for the Lions.
The Lions shot 48 percent from the field and 47 percent from long-range, while making 12-of-13 from the free throw line. Southern had a 47-28 advantage on the boards, including 12-4 on offensive rebounds, leading to a 20-7 advantage in second-chance points. The Lions forced nine turnovers, scoring 17 points off the miscues.
Southern will be back in action this Saturday as the Lions play host to Newman. Tipoff is slated for 3:30 pm.
