MSSU cheerleaders do well at national competition

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

The Missouri Southern Cheer Squad traveled to Orlando, FL this past weekend to participate in the 2020 UCA College Nationals. The squad, made up of 25 girls, competed in the Open All-Girl Gameday Division on Friday, January 17th at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disneyworld and placed 11th in their division.

In the Gameday Competition, each squad pretends they are on the sideline of a game back in their home stadium and must respond to cues given by an announcer.

Each squad performs a sideline chant, a timeout performance, and their university fight song, all called in a random order.

Teams are judged on their ability to correctly respond to the cues given, the effectiveness of the material performed, the ability to correctly execute the skills performed, the ability to use correct technique and lead the crowd.

The squad performed in semi-finals Friday afternoon and advanced to the finals, performing again Friday evening. After the semi-final round, score sheets and judges' comments were given to each squad that advanced to finals. The 13 squads advancing to finals were given just over an hour to make corrections and improvements to their routines based on the judges' comments.

"We couldn't be more proud of this team and the work they put in to make this dream come true," said head coach Aubrey Endicott. "To make it to finals the first year you compete at Nationals is really something special and we are so excited to come back and celebrate our accomplishments with the University and the community. The outpouring of support and congratulations we have received from our friends and family back in Joplin through texts, calls, and social media shows just what a special university and community we cheer for. It was an honor to represent Southern in Orlando."

MSSU Cheer has competed at NCA Nationals in the past, but competing at UCA College Nationals in the Gameday Division is a first. The squad takes pride in cementing their place in MSSU Cheer history and the athletes look forward to competing again soon and continuing to build the program.
Tryouts for next year are scheduled for April 17-19. Those interested should contact Coach Endicott at Endicott-a@mssu.edu.

The MSSU Cheer Squad is coached by Aubrey Endicott and Samantha White.
