Las Vegas Police: MSU running back died helping family member

(The following news release was issued by the Las Vegas Metro Police about the shooting incident that cost the life of Missouri State University redshirt freshman tailback Richard Nelson.)

On January 14, 2017 at approximately 7:36 p.m. LVMPD patrol officers were dispatched to a residence located in the 4800 block of Sacks Drive to investigate reports of a man shot.

Arriving officers located a man in front of the residence suffering from multiple apparent gunshot wounds.

The victim was transported to the Sunrise Trauma Center where he was later pronounced deceased. The investigation initiated by the LVMPD Homicide Section indicated there was a fight outside of the residence between several females.

The victim went outside to assist a family member who was involved in the fight, and a male, who was already outside of the residence, fired multiple shots from a handgun at the victim.

The suspect and several others involved in the physical fight, left the scene in a vehicle before officers arrived.

This is the fourth homicide investigated by the LVMPD in 2017.

The identity of the victim, as well as the cause and manner of death, will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s Office. The suspects are known to the victim’s family, and detectives are working to positively identify and locate the individuals involved.
