MSSU women lose first game, fall to Truman State 67-64

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

After trailing for the first time all season at halftime the Missouri Southern Lions (8-1, 2-0 MIAA) couldn't complete the comeback as they fell 67-64 to Truman State (6-2, 1-0 GLVC) Monday night on Robert Corn Court inside The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

The Bulldogs came out strong as they built a 7-2 lead within the first three minutes before the Lions would answer on a pair threes by Jordan Dinyer and Sharese Jones to give the Lions an 8-7 lead. Truman would answer right back with back-to-back buckets by Allie Norton and Michalina Tomczak to give TSU the lead. The Bulldogs expanded their lead to nine on a jumper by Norton at the 8:44 mark before the Lions would chip away and get the lead down to two at 30-28 on a three pointer by Jenson Maydew headed into halftime.

Southern came out of the locker room on fire as they went on a 5-2 run to take a one point lead on a layup by Dinyer from Lex Fitzpatrick. Camila Lacerda would connect on a bunny to push the Lions lead to four at 38-34 with 16 and a half minutes to play. Both teams would trade buckets before Truman State would go on a 6-0 run to take a five point lead, 45-40, with just over 12 minutes to play. Southern would answer with a 9-0 run of their own taking a five point lead at 61-56 with just over 4:30 to play.

The last five minutes saw both teams go on 4-0 runs and the deciding possession of the game came with 16 seconds to go, with the shot clock winding down Courtney Strait hit a running jumper in the paint to give Truman the 66-64 lead. The Lions would come up empty on the ensuing possession as Jenson Maydew misfired from downtown and Lacerda would foul Tomczak to stop the clock following the defensive rebound. Tomczak would go 1-for-2 from the charity stripe to give Southern one last shot as the three pointer from Fitzpatrick would come up short.

Jones led the way offensively for Southern with 14 points, Hartzog had nine, with Shawnee Phillips, Lacerda, Dinyer, and Maydew each contributing seven. Maydew led the way in rebounding for the Lions with seven and Jones pulled down six. Fitzpatrick, Jones, and Phillips each had three assists for Southern.

The Lions will return to MIAA action on Saturday as they host #1 ranked Emporia State Lady Hornets at noon on Robert Corn Court inside The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
