Missouri Southern (6-4, 1-1 MIAA) came away with an 87-61 win over Washburn (4-6, 1-1 MIAA) Saturday night inside Lee Arena. With the men's win over Washburn Saturday night it completed the first Lions sweep (men and women) of Washburn in Lee Arena since the 2009-10 season.
Southern opened the game on a 6-0 run on a free throw from Cornelius, a three from Barlow, and a layup from Prince. Following a three from Cornelius the Lions lead was 10, 14-4, with 15:27 to play.
Southern would push their lead to 19 four times before a layup from Barlow gave them their largest lead of the half, 21 points, at 37-16 with just over one minute to play. Washburn's Korey Fisher converted a three point play to make the halftime score 37-19.
For the first half Southern shot 50 percent (13-26) from the field including 4-10 from three point range. The Lions defense held Washburn to just 22.6 percent (7-31) from the field, which included 1-9 from long range.
Prince had 10 first half points, while Cameron Cornelius added nine, and Lane Barlow scored seven.
Prince opened the second half with a jumper from the left wing as the Lions took their second largest lead of the game at 39-19. For most of the first give minutes of action in the second stanza Southern and the Ichabods traded buckets as they went into the first media time out at 48-30. Southern never looked back as they kept the lead in the 20 point range for the majority of the second half.
Southern was led by Prince who scored 17 points on 7-13 shooting, 53 percent as he pulled down 10 rebounds. Joining Prince in double figures was Miller with 17, Barlow with 12, Cornelius and Austin Wrightboth with 11, and Renfroe with 10. Cornelius pulled down 8 boards, Barlow had seven, and Renfroe six.
The Lions shot 55 percent from the field and 48 percent from long range, while holding a 39-33 advantage on the boards. The Lions had a 40-26 advantage in the point and scored 17 points off of 14 Washburn turnovers.
