The Missouri Southern Lions (5-4, 0-1 MIAA) couldn't overcome the hot shooting from Nebraska-Kearney (3-1, 1-0) MIAA as they dropped a 93-73 decision at the Health & Sports Center on Thursday night.
UNK took a 3-0 lead before Austin Wright would even the game at 3-3 with just 2 minutes into the game. The Lopers would then go on a 25-5 run and push the lead to 20, 28-8, at the 9:36 mark before a jumper from Taevaunn Princewould end the run. UNK would have their largest lead of the first half at 29, at 51-22, on a jumper from Connor Beranek with 37 seconds to play.
For the half UNK shot 62 percent, 18-29, from the field, while the Lions shot 33 percent, 11-33. Prince led the way for Southern with 10 points while Greg Renfroe and Cameron Cornelius each had four rebounds.
The second half saw UNK continue the hot shooting as they went 17-30, from the field, for 57 percent in the half and finished the game 35-59 for 59 percent. The Lopers saw their largest lead at 38, 86-48, with 5:20 left to play.
The Lions chipped away at the lead, going on a 25-7 run the last five minutes getting the lead down to 20, 93-73, asCharlie Brown hit a layup with two seconds left. Blaine Miller led the way for the Lions in the second stanza as he scored all 11 of his points.
Ethan Brozek and Conner Beranek led the way for the Lopers with 21 points each and Brozek pulled down 11 boards as well.
Cornelius finished with six rebounds to lead Southern while Renfroe added five. Prince led the Lions in scoring with 12, Miller with 11, and Lane Barlow finished with 10.
The Lions will be back in action next when Southern travels to Washburn to take on the Ichabods on Saturday at 7pm.
