Six Lions scored in double-figures as the No. 19 Missouri Southern men's basketball team shot 64 percent from the field, defeating Truman State 106-77 tonight in non-conference action at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Southern (7-1) won for the 11th time in a row against the Bulldogs. Elyjah Clark scored 23 points on 8-of-14 from the field and 5-of-9 from the three-point line. Kinzer Lambert scored 19 points and added eight rebounds and six assists, while Cam Martin scored 18. Reggie Tharp had 15 points and five assists, while Braelon Walker and Enis Memic scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Truman (4-5) got 24 points from Cade McKnight and 21 points from Brodric Thomas.
Both teams traded baskets early before the Lions got a pair of three's from Clark and a layup from Tharp, while a free throw later from Tharp capped a 9-0 run from the Lions to see Southern go up 20-11 with 12:30 left in the half.
Southern led by 13 (34-21) with just under seven minutes left, but the Bulldogs reeled off a 16-4 run to get within one point (38-37) with 3:19 left. Three's from Parker Jennings and Clark, the latter coming at the buzzer, gave the Lions a five-point lead at the break (48-43).
Southern started the second half on a 16-4 run and forced a Truman timeout as eight points from Martin (two three's) and a pair of three's from Lambert gave the Lions a 64-47 lead with 16:29 left.
A running layup from Clark pushed the Lions' lead to 19 (73-54) with 12 left on the clock. A three from Walker with 10:32 left made the score 78-59 and a layup from Tharp the next rip down made the lead 21 with just under ten minutes left.
A three from Lambert gave the Lions a 91-68 lead with 6:27 left in the game, and a layup from Clark the next trip down pushed the lead to 25. A layup from Dexter Frisbie off an assist from Lambert pushed the Lions over the century mark (101-75) and a three from Walker the next trip down pushed the lead to 29 with just under two minutes to go.
The Lions shot 64 percent from the field and 70 percent in the second half. Southern made 16 three-pointers at a 55 percent clip. The Lions had a 44-26 advantage in the paint and had a 37-21 advantage on the boards after trailing 15-13 at the half.
Southern will be back in action on Thursday evening as the Lions play host to Central Oklahoma. Tip off from Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center is slated for 7:30 pm.
