A career-high in points for Zoe Campbell helped lead the Missouri Southern women's basketball team over visiting Rogers State, 71-50 on Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Southern (5-2) got a career-high 14 points and nine rebounds from Campbell as she went 6-for-8 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Chasidee Owens scored 13 and had 12 rebounds, while Destiny Cozart scored 11.
Rogers State (3-5) got 11 points from Carlye Bohannan and nine points from Lauren Schuldt.
Both teams traded points for most of the first quarter, but a layup from Campbell with 2:54 left gave the Lions a 11-7 lead. A layup from Desitny Cozart put the Lions' lead at four (13-9) and after the Hillcats had tied the game at 15, a three from Layne Skiles as time expired gave the Lions an 18-15 lead after one.
A jumper from Campbell midway through the second quarter gave the Lions a 22-17 lead, but the Hillcats would not go away. RSU tied the game at 26 with 2:30 left in the quarter, but a 7-0 run from the Lions to close the half gave the Lions a 33-26 lead at the break.
A rebound putback for Cozart with under a minute to go gave the Lions a ten-point lead late in the third (48-38) and a block on the defensive end from Laure Assena gave the Lions a 48-38 after three.
A fury of free throws midway through the fourth extended the Lions' lead to 14 (58-44) with 6:19 left. A pair of free throws from Campbell inside 30 seconds gave the Lions a 70-51 lead and that would prove to be the final score.
Southern shot 40 percent from the field, while limiting RSU to just 25 percent from the floor. The Lions had a 55-37 rebound advantage over the Hillcats and a 36-20 advantage in the paint. The Southern bench outscored the RSU reserves 37-13.
The Lions will be back in action on December 6 when Southern opens up MIAA play with Central Oklahoma at home. Tip off will be 5:30 pm inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
