Explosive third quarter leads MSSU women to 63-54 win over Northeastern State

The Missouri Southern women's basketball team forced turnovers and out scored Northeastern State 17-6 in the third quarter, en route to a 63-54 win over the RiverHawks today on Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Southern (6-3, 1-1 MIAA) got 20 points from Chelsey Henry as she went 7-of-13 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Amber Buch and Chassidee Owens scored nine points each, while Krista Clark, Layne Skiles and Morgan Brighwell had six points each.

NSU (2-7, 0-2 MIAA) got 18 points from Cenia Hayes, while Cailyn Long scored 15.



The Lions jumped out to a 7-2 lead after a three-point play from Buch with 7:11 left in the first quarter. A layup from Owens with 5:52 left made the score 11-4 and then buckets from Skiles and Henry, the latter a three from the wing made the score 16-6 with 4:23 left.

A three from Brightwell with 2:28 left made the score 22-10 and another three from Brightwell as the buzzer sounded gave the Lions a 25-13 lead after one.

Southern led 27-17 midway through the second quarter, but NSU started to make a run, and got within three (29-26) after a three from Hayes with just under three to go in the half. A layup from Henry with 42 seconds left gave the Lions a 35-29 lead at the break.

A three from Buch with just under seven to go in the third gave the Lions a 40-31 lead. Turning turnovers into points, the Lions utilized four-straight RiverHawks' turnovers (six total) to put together a 12-0 run, getting points off of three's from Buch and Henry and layups from Henry and Destiny Cozart to lead 47-31 with 3:24 left in the third. The Lions would outscore the RiverHawks 17-6 in the quarter.

NSU started a full-court press in the fourth quarter and chipped away at the Lions' lead. Southern led 55-41 with seven minutes to go in the game, but the RiverHawks' pressure cued a 14-4 run and the Lions' lead was just five (59-54) with a minute to go.

NSU had to start to foul to stop the clock, however, and the Lions made four in a row from Henry and Clark to secure the win.

The Lions out rebounded the RiverHawks 44-32 in the game, including a 14-8 advantage on the offensive boards.

The Lions will be back in action on December 17 as Southern plays host to Culver-Stockton College. Tip off from the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center is slated for 5:30 pm.
