MSSU women fall to Central Oklahoma 79-60

A big second quarter doomed the Missouri Southern women's basketball team as the Lions fell 79-60 at home to No. 23 Central Oklahoma tonight inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Southern (5-3, 0-1 MIAA) was led by Chelsey Henry as she scored 21 points and added seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Amber Buch scored nine, while Chasidee Owens added eight.

Central Oklahoma (8-0, 1-0 MIAA) got a pair of 20-point performances as Micayla Haynes scored 26 and Ireon Smith added 20.



The Bronchos jumped out to a 4-0 lead, before four-straight points from Henry tied the score at four with 8:11 left. UCO rattled off five-straight points, but the Lions went on a 9-4 run to close the quarter, tied at 13 with the Bronchos.

UCO opened up a 26-15 lead to start the second quarter, but the Lions fought back and went on an 11-4 run to get back within four (30-26) with 1:40 left in the quarter. The Bronchos, however, closed the quarter on a 7-0 run giving UCO a 37-26 lead at the break.

Four quick points from the Lions to start the third quarter forced a Bronchos' timeout with 9:04 left in the quarter. UCO shot ahead and led by 12 (46-37) with 5:42 left in the third and led 57-45 after three.

A jumper from the Bronchos made the score 61-49 with 4:52 left in the fourth and a three from UCO made the score 71-52 with 2:47 left, forcing a Lions' timeout. The Lions would not get any closer.

Southern out rebounded the Bronchos 36-31, including a 15-6 advantage that led to a 15-4 advantage in second-chance points.

Southern will be back in action this Saturday as the Lions play host to Northeastern State. Tip off from Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center is slated for 1:30 pm.
