Media sources are saying the St. Louis Cardinals are close to signing Detroit Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta, though there is some talk that Redbird officials may be looking at Peralta as much for his ability to play third base and will still be hunting a shortstop if Peralta is signed.
Peralta was suspended for 50 days during the 2013 season for violation of Major League Baseball's drug policy, but the Cardinals have had some success with signing players in that situation before.
Former Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin was suspended the year before he joined St. Louis.
