The St. Louis Cardinals have traded 2011 World Series most valuable player David Freese to the Los Angeles Angels for outfielder Peter Bourjos.
With Bourjos, the Cardinals are getting a superior center fielder who is an upgrade over John Jay, but who has been somewhat injury prone.
St. Louis is expected to move Matt Carpenter to third base and give rookie Kolten Wong a shot at winning the second base job.
With Bourjos on board and highly touted rookie Oscar Taveras just added to the roster, plus the Cardinals wanting to give Matt Adams more at-bats in 2014, it is unlikely the club will make a serious effort at resigning free agent Carlos Beltran.
It could also mean the end of John Jay as a Cardinal since Jay's defense slipped considerably during the 2013 season and Shane Robinson is considered more likely to be productive, both as a pinch hitter and as a defensive replacement at all three outfield positions.
