Owens scores career-high 32 points as MSSU women down Lincoln 74-65

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Behind a double-double that included a career-high 32 points and 12 rebounds by senior Chasidee Owens, the Missouri Southern State University Lions women's basketball team won their second Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) contest of the season and their second straight game with a 74-65 win over the Lincoln University Blue Tigers on Thursday night.

With the win MSSU improves to 5-10 overall and 2-5 in the MIAA while Lincoln falls to 3-12 overall and 0-6 in the league.

In addition to besting her career-high by eight points, Owens tied her career-high in field goals in a game as she hit ten in the contest.

Junior Zoe Campbell tallied two blocks in the game to set a new MSSU season mark at 44 to pass Brianna Volmer (2005-06) who had 42. Campbell can really distance her record as the Lions still 12 more games on the season.

The contest started Owens hitting her first three field goal attempts to give the Lions an early lead. They led 11-4 after the first media timeout. The Lions allowed Lincoln to battle back into the game and closed the gap to three points with the Lions leading 17-14 after one. MSSU hit 7-of-11 (63 percent) from the field while holding Lincoln to 6-of-19 (31.6 percent) from the field.

The Blue Tigers quickly tied the game on a three-pointer early in the second frame. The Lions then outscored the Blue Tigers 14-13 in the quarter to see the lead improve by one to a halftime score of 31-27.

The Lions then saw the lead grow to double figures as they scored 20 points in the quarter. They led 51-40 behind an 8-of-15 (53.3 percent) shooting showing from the field. The Blue Tigers were only able to cash in on 5-of-18 (27.8 percent) from the field in the stanza.

The Blue Tigers outscored the Lions in the final quarter including a 9-2 run in the final two minutes of the game, however, the Lions had enough momentum to coast to the finish line with the win.

Aside from Owen's 32 points, senior Destiny Cozart scored 17 points. As a team the Lions hit 26-of-50 (52 percent) from the field while hitting 21-of-32 (65.6 percent) from the free throw line. Lincoln hit 21-of-66 (31.8 percent) from the field including 8-of-24 (33.3 percent) from beyond the arch and 15-of-24 (62.5 percent) from the charity stripe.

The Lions stay on the road for two more games as they will take on Central Missouri on Saturday (Jan. 18) at 1 p.m. They will close out the road trip the following Saturday (Jan. 25) when they travel to Pittsburg State.
