The Lions, though, chipped away at the lead and a jumper from Stokes capped an 8-1 run and tied the game at 29 with 3:31 to go. The game was tied again at 31 after another jumper from Stokes and a pair of freebies from Owens with 1:22 to go gave the Lions a 33-31 lead. After Newman jumped back ahead with just under a minute to go, a jumper from Kaiulani Jones and a pair of free throws from Owens gave the Lions a 37-34 lead at the break.

A bucket from Jordan Schoenberger just as the 4th quarter had started pushed the Southern lead back to ten (55-45), while a layup from Skiles with 6:39 left gave Southern a 63-49 lead and forced another Jets' timeout. The Lions led by 15 (65-50) after a jumper from Shoenberger, but an 11-0 run from the Jets cut the Lions' lead to six (65-61) with 2:20 to go.

A pair of free throws from Owens with 1:58 on the clock stopped the run and put Southern up 67-61, but Newman scored four quick points and got within two (67-65) with just more than a minute to play. A jumper from Campbell with 45 seconds on the clock gave the Lions a 69-65 lead, but a three the next trip down for the Jets cut it back to one.

The Lions had the ball with 25 seconds on the clock and up by one and Buch was fouled with 4.7 seconds left, promptly making both freebies to give the Lions a 71-68 lead and proved to be enough.

Southern shot 45 percent from the field and out rebounded the Jets 40-28.

The Lions will be back in action this Thursday as Southern travels to Lincoln University. Tip off is slated for 5:30 pm from Jason Gym.
