Zoe Campbell tied the single-season blocks record and Destiny Cozart scored 17, but the Missouri Southern women's basketball team fell 66-51 to Central Oklahoma on Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Southern (3-10, 0-5 MIAA) was led by Cozart's 17 points as she made four three's on the night and added five rebounds and two assists. Campbell had 10 points and two blocks, to go along with three assists. The two blocks give her 42 on the season and tie her with Brianna Volmer (2005-06) for the top single-season mark in MSSU history.
UCO (11-3, 5-1 MIAA) was led by 12 points from Jaci Littell and 11 from Micayla Haynes.
Southern opened up a 9-2 lead after a three from Owens with 6:30 to go in the first quarter. Another three from Cozart made the score 14-7, Lions with 4:54 to go in the quarter, but the Bronchos fought back and took a 16-14 lead after a three from Littell with 1:58 left.
The teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter and the Bronchos led 19-18 after one.
Cozart hit her fourth three of the half to put the Lions up 21-18 early in the second quarter and both teams went cold with the Bronchos hitting the only shot of the quarter until the five-minute mark when Kaiulani Jones hit a three to put the Lions up 24-21. A three from the Bronchos with 3:20 left in the quarter put UCO back on top 26-24 and a fast-break bucket the next trip down gave the Bronchos a 28-24 lead with just under three to play.
Southern got a pair of free throws from Layne Skiles with 1:47 left and the Bronchos got a late bucket to make the halftime score 30-26.
UCO opened the half on an 8-2 run and led 38-28 with 7:19 left in the quarter. A layup from Jordan Schoenberger cut the lead to seven (42-35) and a three-point play from Cozart again cut into the Bronchos' lead making the score 44-38 with 1:32 to go in the third. A pair of freebies from Amber Buch cut the lead to four (44-40) with under a minute to go, and a bucket from Campbell as time expired cut the lead to two (44-42) after three.
The Bronchos started the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run and led 50-42 before a bucket from Campbell with a little more than eight minutes left stopped the run. That would be as close as the Lions would be as UCO controlled the fourth quarter.
The Lions will be back in action this Saturday as Southern plays host to Newman. Tipoff is slated for 1:30 pm.
