Warrensburg, Mo.- An early offensive surge by the University of Central Missouri lifted the Jennies over the Missouri Southern State women's basketball team, 76-44.
UCM improved to 13-3 and 7-0 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), while the Lions fell to 5-11 overall and 2-6 in the MIAA.
The game started with the Jennies jumping out to a 14-0 lead though the first four minutes of the game. Southern's first points came at the 5:55 mark as Layne Skiles scored on a layup. Central Missouri continued to pile it on in the quarter as they took a 31-5 lead after the opening frame. The Lions were only able to hit 2-of-10 from the field in the first quarter while allowing the Jennies to hit 12-of-20, including 2-of-5 from beyond the arch.
Despite missing some key free throws, the Lions went on a 5-0 run in the middle of the second quarter and trailed at the half, 47-20.
The lead did not diminish in the third as the Jennies led 65-31 before outscoring the Lions in the fourth.
Chasidee Owens led the Lions with nine points. As a team, the Lions shot 30.5 percent from the field (18-of-59) while they only hit 2-of-9 (22.2 percent) from beyond the arch and 6-of-13 (46.2 percent) from the charity stripe. Zoe Campbell had three blocks in the game, bringing her school record total to 47 this season. She has 98 in her career, placing her 12 from setting the career mark at Southern.
The Jennies connected on 27-of-63 (42.9 percent) from the field and 17-of-24 (70.8 percent) from the free throw line.
The Lions will finish up their three-game road streak with a date at Pittsburg State University next Saturday (Jan. 25).
