MSSU women fall to Washburn 83-76

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

The Missouri Southern women's basketball team got 26 points from Destiny Cozart and 19 from Zoe Campbell but the Lions came up just short in an 83-76 loss at home to Washburn.

The Lions (2-7, 0-2 MIAA) were led by Cozart's night as she went 9-of-16 from the field and 5-of-11 from long range, adding six rebounds, four assists and one block.

Campbell had 19 on 6-of-9 shooting and a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. She added five rebounds and three blocks, moving into second-place on the all-time list with 85 career blocks, passing Jensen Maydew in the process.

Washburn (4-4, 1-1 MIAA) was led by 21 points from Reagan Phelan and 18 from Hunter Bentley.

The Ichabods opened up a 21-12 lead after the first quarter, but the Lions fought back and a 7-2 run to start the second quarter cut the lead to four (23-19 with eight minutes to go. Washburn led by seven (38-31) with 2:46 to go, and the Ichabods closed the quarter on an 8-3 run to lead 46-34 going into the locker room.

Washburn led by 13 (57-44) with four minutes left in the third quarter, but a 7-0 run from Southern cut the lead to six (57-51) with 1:43 left and the Lions trailed by eight 63-55 after three.

The Ichabods, again, opened up a 13 point plead (68-55) with nine minutes to go in the game, but a layup from Cozart, a jumper from Campbell and a free throw from Morgan Brightwell, the last coming with 3:44 left in the game, tied the score at 71. That would be as close as the Lions would get.

Southern shot 48 percent from the field in the game, limiting the Ichabods to 42 percent from the field. The Lions out rebounded Washburn 38-36, and held a 40-28 advantage in the paint. Washburn forced 16 Southern turnovers, scoring 22 points off of the miscues.

The Lions will be off for finals next week and Southern will be back in action on December 17, playing host to Oklahoma Wesleyan at 5:30 pm inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
