The 15th-ranked Missouri Southern men's basketball team set a new school record with its 21st-straight home win as the Lions defeated visiting Washburn 90-83 today on Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
The Lions (7-1, 2-0 MIAA) break the previous record of 20 set during the time of February of 1999 to November of 2000. The current mark has seen the Lions win the final four games in the 2016-17 season, all 13 games last year and the first four home games this year to set the new record.
Cam Martin led the Lions with 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting and 4-of-7 from long range. He added eight rebounds, six assists and two blocks in the game. Reggie Tharp scored 16 and added nine assists, while Kinzer Lambert scored 14 and Elyjah Clark had 13. Braelon Walker had nine points and two steals, Parker Jennings scored nine off the bench, and Stan Scott added seven.
Washburn (4-4, 1-1 MIAA) had four score in double-figures, led by 23 points from Tyler Geiman.
The Ichabods led by ten twice in the first half, the second time coming at 29-19 with 7:30 to go. Southern, however, went on an 11-0 run and led 31-29 after a three from Martin with 3:54 to go, while a three from Lambert with 2:47 left made the Southern lead seven (37-30) as the run reached 18-1. A three from Scott with 50 seconds left gave the Lions a 43-36 lead, but Washburn answered back with a three from Geiman to make the score 43-39 at the break.
Clark opened up the second half with a three from the Lions and Lambert added one of his own to give the Lions a 49-39 lead just a minute and a half into the second half. A three from Martin with 16:25 left to go pushed the lead to 15 (56-41). Southern led by 19 twice, the later coming after a jumper in the paint from Ted Brown with 11:25 left making the score 70-51.
Washburn chipped away at the lead, but the Lions held off the Ichabods, making free throws down the stretch.
Southern shot 53 percent from the field in the game and 54 percent from beyond the three-point line. The Lions made 83 percent of their free throws in the game.
Southern will be off for finals this week, but the Lions will be back in action on December 16 with a game at Texas A&M Commerce. Tip off is slated for noon.
