Late run gives MSSU men 95-64 win over Pittsburg State

The Missouri Southern men's basketball team used a 33-12 run over the final nine minutes of the game and defeated Pittsburg State, 95-64 Tuesday night on Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Southern (6-1, 1-0 MIAA) records the largest victory in the history of the series with the Gorillas as the 31-point win tops the 29-point win over the Gorillas on February of 1984.

Cam Martin led the way for the Lions as he scored 23 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to go with five assists and three blocks. Kinzer Lambert had 15 points, while Reggie Tharp had 13 points, five assists, four steals and his first collegiate block. Braelon Walker scored 11 points and had four assists of his own.

Pitt (4-2, 0-1 MIAA) was led by 30 points from Marcel Cherry.








Southern jumped out to a 10-1 lead after a layup from Martin with 14:56 left in the first half, and a three from Parker Jennings with 12:43 left made the score 15-3, Lions. A three pointer, then a break-away layup from Stan Scott pushed the Lions' lead to 22-10 with 10:01 left in the half.

A three from Walker with five minutes to go pushed the Southern lead to 27-17, and a quick 7-0 run, capped by a three from Parker Jennings, gave the Lions a 34-17 lead with 3:04 left in the half, forcing a Pitt timeout. Southern led 37-22 at the break.

A three-point play from Martin put the Lions up 21 (61-40) with 12:10 to go in the half, while a three from Tharp pushed the lead to 71-55, Lions with 7:20 to go in the game. The Southern run reached 21-3 after a three from Lambert with 5:36 to go in the game.

The Lions shot 55 percent from the field and 46 percent from long-range. Southern out rebounded Pitt 43-32 and had a 46-26 advantage in the paint. The Lions forced 14 turnovers and scored 20 points off of the miscues. The Lions had a 17-0 advantage in fast-break points and the Southern bench out scored Pitt 26-14.

The Lions will be back in action this Saturday as Southern plays host to Washburn. Tip off is slated for 3:30.
