Emporia, Kan. - The Missouri Southern softball team split on day two after putting together a 9-6 victory over Minnesota Duluth and then falling to Augustana (SD) 7-0 to end day two inside the Trusler Sports Complex Saturday afternoon.
Game One
After falling behind 1-0 in the first to the Minnesota Duluth (17-5) Bulldogs, the Lions came back with a run in the bottom of the first before going on a six-run explosion in the second to take a 7-2 lead.
The Bulldogs scored three runs in the fifth to get within two, but the Lions answered again for two runs with two outs in the bottom half and eventually won by three.
First baseman Erika Lutgen went 2-for-4 with a homerun for four RBIs and a run scored. Lead-off hitter Abi Corbetthad a 3-for-3 stance, scoring two runs and knocking in one. Elizabeth Windsor added a RBI-double and a run scored as well.
Starting pitcher Taurean Guzman registered 5 1/3 innings pitched, allowing six runs on seven hits, while striking out four batters in the win. Freshman Abby Atkin came in to close it out by not allowing a single hit or run in 1 2/3 innings.
Game Two
Augustana (18-4) took an early two-run lead in the second on a single to right center and then added two more in the third from a two-run homer that just got over the right-center wall. The Vikings extended their lead to seven to wrap up the game (7-0). The Lions recorded four hits with four players each getting a single.
Up Next
To wrap up their second trip in Emporia, MSSU does battle with the Minot State University Beavers tomorrow morning at 10:00 am.
