The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) congratulates Carthage High School sophomore Trenton Meyer on making history by becoming the first student archer ever to shoot a perfect score in an archery competition under the Missouri National Archery in the Schools Program (MoNASP). Meyer posted a perfect 300/300 score at the Academy Outdoors bullseye shoot in Joplin on Saturday at Missouri Southern State University.
"There's not very many people in the whole world that's ever done it,” Meyer said excitedly after his score was announced. “It's the first in the state of Missouri. Everybody was yelling. Everybody was super, super happy. I didn't believe it. I thought I was hallucinating."
The archery tournament was a qualifying match for students to attend the tenth annual MoNASP state tournament March 23-24 in Branson. More than 12,000 student archers from around the state have competed so far this winter in local tournaments with the hope of qualifying for one of the 2,500 spots at the state tournament. Student archers who shoot qualifying scores at the state tournament will earn spots at the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) national tournament this spring in Louisville, Ky.
According to NASP, Meyer joins an elite group of only a handful of students who have ever shot a perfect score in such a tournament. Meyers has been participating in archery for the past three years.
"It's incredible,” said Carthage High School Archery Coach Caleb Patrick after hearing the score at the tournament. “The adrenaline high today has been pretty awesome and to hear the buzz around the arena here today is pretty cool. We’re very happy for him and he's worked really hard to get to this point."
MoNASP is coordinated through MDC and the Conservation Federation of Missouri (CFM) in partnership with more than 670 participating schools and numerous supporting organizations throughout the state. More than 170,000 Missouri students participate in the program. MoNASP is an affiliate of NASP and promotes education, self-esteem, and physical activity for students in grades 4-12 through participation in the sport of archery.
MDC and the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation are hosting the MoNASP state tournament March 23 and 24 at the Branson Convention Center, 200 Sycamore St. The public is invited to attend to support participants. The gate fee is $7 for adults, $3 for kids ages 3-11, and free for children 2 and under.
