The Missouri Southern men's and women's track and field teams will play host to the MSSU Open this weekend inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center on the Mercy Indoor Track.
The meet will begin on Friday afternoon at 2:30 pm with the men's long jump and weight throw. Running events start at 5 pm on Friday with the prelims of the 60m. dash. Events begin on Saturday at 10:30 am with the men's shot put, as well as the women's pole vault and triple jump. Finals of the running events begin at 3 pm on Saturday.
Both teams are in action for the first time this calendar year and just the second time overall after opening the indoor season in December at Pittsburg State. The men have one automatic qualifier in Jayce Thomas who set a new school record in the heptathlon and won the event at PSU. Thomas currently has the top heptathlon score so far in Division II. Eric Schott also set a new MSSU record in the 3k and sits in 8th place in the early season rankings in the event. Morgan Holdhas the fifth-best pole vault so far, while Thomas' high jump mark ranks tenth-best.
On the women's side, Melanie Bower has the 12th best pole vault so far this season, while Brittani Reagan and Kaylee Morgan rank 7th and 17th, respectively in the triple jump and long jump. Morgan also ranks 12th in the pentathlon.
The meet will feature 20 different Division I and II, as well as NAIA squads. A host of junior colleges will also be coming in to compete.
