Missouri Southern Director of Athletics Jared Bruggeman has announced today that Chris McNaughton has been named the next head coach of the women's soccer program at Missouri Southern State University.
McNaughton comes to Southern after serving three seasons as the assistant coach at the University of Louisiana-Monroe. Prior to that, McNaughton was the assistant coach at Arkasnas-Little Rock for four seasons, as well as the head coach at Lyon (Ark.) College and an assistant at his alma mater Ottawa (Kan.) University.
"I'm extremely excited to bring on Chris (McNaughton) to lead our soccer program," Bruggeman said. "He rose to the top of a very talented pool of applicants. The search committee found his dedication, years of experience, concern for student athlete well-being, attention to detail, as well as his vision for the program made him the right choice for this position. We look forward to a new era in southern women's soccer under his direction!"
McNaughton's 2014 ULM squad broke the program record for points in a season with 126. It shattered the previous record of 104 set in 2005. ULM dished out 52 assists, the most in school history. The Warhawks ended the season two wins better than its 2013 win total and also increased its conference win tally.
McNaughton coached an All-Regional player in Antonia Land, the team captain, was named to the NSCAA All-South Region Third-Team.
Prior to ULM, McNaughton spent four seasons (2009-12) as an assistant coach at UALR and helped the team to an appearance in the 2009 Sun Belt Tournament, where the Trojans advanced to the championship match after knocking off No. 1-seeded FIU in the opening round and North Texas in the semifinals.
Prior to joining the UALR staff, McNaughton compiled a 34-19-3 overall record in three seasons as the head coach at Lyon College, a NAIA program in Batesville, Ark. McNaughton inherited a program that combined for an 8-39 record prior to his arrival and he guided the team to a 13-6 record in his first season as head coach. The 2006 team recorded the program's first postseason victory with a win in the TranSouth Athletic Conference Tournament and earned an at-large bid to the Region XI Tournament for the first time in school history.
McNaughton led Lyon College to a second-straight winning season in 2007 before losing to eventual NAIA national champion Martin Methodist College in the semifinals of the TranSouth Athletic Tournament. The next season, the Pipers put together a 12-5-2 record and tied for second in the conference with a 4-1-1 mark - the highest finish in the program's history. The Pipers once again advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament and received votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll.
In all, 15 players were named either first or second team TranSouth All-Conference and nine players were named TranSouth Conference Scholar Athletes during McNaughton's three seasons at Lyon.
McNaughton started his collegiate coaching career as an assistant men's and women's soccer coach at Ottawa (Kan.) University from 2002-05. In his four seasons at Ottawa, McNaughton helped lead the women's soccer team to three consecutive KCAC postseason tournament championships (2002-04) and three straight KCAC regular-season titles (2003-05). The Lady Braves made four consecutive NAIA Region IV appearances, while the men's program won the 2004 KCAC postseason tournament title on its way to its first Region IV Tournament appearance in school history.
McNaughton was a five-time NAIA Academic All-American at Ottawa University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in business administration and minor in management information systems in 2002. He went on to earn his master's degree in business administration from Ottawa University in 2004.
After starting at Missouri Valley College, McNaughton went on to earn KCAC All-Conference honors during his playing career at Ottawa University (1999-01). While in high school, he earned all-state, all-district and all-conference honors at Harrisonville (Mo.).
McNaughton obtained his USSF "B" License in coaching education in January of 2011, his Premier Diploma from the NSCAA in January of 2009 and the National Goalkeeping Diploma from the NSCAA in March of 2007.
