The Missouri Southern men's basketball team posed a furious second-half comeback, but could not overcome a hot-shooting Nebraska-Kearney team as the Lions fell 113-100 tonight on the road against the Lopers.
Southern (8-5, 5-2 MIAA) was led in scoring by Taevaunn Prince as the senior tied a career-high with 38 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, going 12-17 from the field and 13-14 from the free throw line. Austin Wright scored 17 points, while Charlie Brown had 11 and Isaac Kreuer scored ten. Wright had three long-balls and is now just one three-pointer from tying Jason Adams for second-place all-time in career three's.
UNK (6-5, 3-3 MIAA) had three score in double-figures as Trey Lansman scored 25 points, while Lane Rohrich and Connor Beranek had 24 points each.
A three pointer from Wright with 14:59 left in the first half gave the Lions a 9-8 lead, but UNK went on a 4-0 run to go up 15-11 and the Lopers would not give up the lead.
UNK led 33-16 with 7:20 to go in the first half and led 58-33 at the break.
The Lopers pushed their lead to 30 (74-44) with 14:33 left to go, but the Lions slowly started to chip away at the advantage. A layup from Blaine Miller with 11:24 left capped a 17-8 MSSU run and made the score 82-61. Kearney led by 21 (89-68) with 8:53 left to go in the game and the Lions went on a 19-8 run over the next four minutes and cut the lead to 11 (98-87) after a jumper on the baseline from Wright.
A layup from DJ Feitl with 2:08 to go cut the advantage to ten (105-95) and a three pointer from Andrew Ballock with five seconds left provided the final tally. It was Ballock's first career points.
The Lions shot 67 percent in the second half from the field and 50 percent from the three-point line, turning in a 59 percent mark from the field for the game, and shooting 83 percent from the free throw line.
However, UNK shot 63 percent from the field in the game and 56 percent from long-range, while adding an 83 percent showing at the charity stripe.
