MSSU men fall to Northwest Missouri 89-77

The Missouri Southern basketball team ran into a hot Northwest Missouri squad as the Lions fell to the Bearcats 89-77 tonight on Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Southern (5-4, 2-1 MIAA) was led by Taevaunn Prince as the senior had 23 points and nine rebounds, going 7-114 from the field and 8-9 from the free-throw line. Charlie Brown scored 15, while Greg Renfroe had nine points and three blocks.Austin Wright and Taylor Luster had eight points each.

Northwest (5-2, 3-0 MIAA) was led by Anthony Woods with 25 points, while Justin Pitts added 19 and Conner Crooker had 18.

A three pointer from Brown started things off for the Lions on their first trip down the floor. The Bearcats, however, opened up an 11-7 lead with 15:37 left in the half after a jumper from Pitts.

The Bearcats lead was seven (23-16) after another jumper from Pitts, and a three from Crooker gave Northwest a 32-24 lead with 4:11 left. A three from Prince as time expired made the halftime score 38-31, Northwest.

Brown led the Lions in scoring in the first half with ten points on 4-7 shooting.

A pair of free throws from Prince cut the lead for Northwest to just three (47-44) with 15:18 left in the second half, but the Bearcats opened up a 10-point lead (57-47) after a pair of free throws from Woods with 11:45 to go.

The Northwest lead reached 13 (75-62) after another bucket from Woods and the Lions got as close as seven (84-77) after a pair of free throws from Prince with just over a minute to go.

Southern shot 47 percent from the field and 33 percent from long range. The Lions made 73 percent of their free throws, as well. Northwest shot 56 percent from the field and out rebounded the Lions 37-26, holding a 50-34 advantage in the paint.

Southern will be back in action this Saturday when the Lions head to St. Joseph to take on Missouri Western. Tip off is slated for 5 pm.
