MSSU soccer falls to Tulsa in exhibition

The University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane knocked of the Missouri Southern Women's Soccer team 3-1 Sunday evening in an exhibition match at Hurricane Stadium.

The Golden Hurricane got things started off in the 30th minute as Caitlin Jancuska put a header past Southern's senior goalie Shawnee Phillips off the assist from Rachel Thun. The Lions first shot of the match would come in the 36th minute as sophomore midfielder Taylor Beck sent the shot wide left. Phillips would come up with a save at the end of the half as the Lions trailed NCAA D-1 Tulsa 1-0 at the break.

In the second stanza the Golden Hurricane made it 2-0 in the 66th minute as Thun tapped in the goal from five yards out on a cross from Roman Edwards. Just four minutes later, TU made it 3-0 as Madison Smith beat Phillips on a penalty kick.

Southern would get on the board in the 83rd minute as senior forward Karley Thomas scored from three yards out on the left side with assists to fellow seniors Kayla Gajewski and Kimmy Hulse.

In her debut Phillips recorded ten saves for the Green & Gold while Thomas, Beck, and senior Michaela Altvater recorded the three shots for the Lions.

Southern will open its regular season on Thursday September 3 as they travel to Springfield to take on the Drury Panthers at the Cooper Soccer Complex at 5 pm.
