MSSU women fall to Central Oklahoma 54-51

The Missouri Southern Women's Basketball Lions (8-4, 2-3 MIAA) dropped their fourth straight Thursday night in a 54-51 loss to Central Oklahoma (12-3, 5-1 MIAA).
Central Oklahoma got off to a fast start as they connected on back-to-back jumpers for a 4-0 lead before the Lions would take control of the first half as Jordan Dinyer sank back-to-back layups and Sharese Jones added a three for a 7-4 lead with 14:48 to play in the half. Southern would push the lead up to seven at 16-9, with 9:23 left in the half, as Tami Morice hit a jumper outside the lane on a pass from Kenya Brown. UCO would go on a 6-0 run, all by Julia Mason, to pull the Bronchos within one at 18-17 with 5:42 left. Southern would answer with their own 6-0 run as Shawnee Phillips hit a jumper, pair of free throws by Dinyer, and another pair by Nic Hartzog would give the Lions the 24-17 lead with just under three minutes in the half. UCO's Kylie Mayes would connect on a layup with 1:43 left, to finish off the first half scoring and five the Lions a 24-19 headed into the locker room.
For the half Southern shot 34.6 percent (9-26) from the floor while allowing UCO just 29.6 percent (8-27) from the floor. Both teams finished the half perfect from the charity stripe with the Lions going 4-4 and Central Oklahoma 2-2.
Southern started the second half right where the left off as Jones found a streaking Dinyer for a layup for a seven point lead 16 seconds into the half.  Jones would hit a jumper herself and Dinyer got another layup fromCamila Lacerda to give Southern a 30-19 lead with just over 17:30 to play. The Lions lead would hit 13 points twice in the half, as Jones would connect on a three for a 34-21 lead and Hartzog drove the lane for a 36-23 lead at the 15:39 mark. The Bronchos would answer with a 9-0 run to cut the lead down to five at 36-31 with 11:38 to play. The biggest lead the Lions would have for the remaining of the game was seven as Jolee Sharphit a three at the 6:37 mark to give Southern a 43-36 lead. After a layup from UCO, Hartzog would drive the lane again and get Southern a seven point lead at 45-38 with 5:17 left. UCO would then go on a 16-7 run to end the game and escape Joplin with the 54-51 win.
For the game Southern finished shooting 38 percent (19-50) from the field, including 5-21 (23.8 percent) from three point range. The Lions held UCO to 34.6 percent (18-52) from the field and 33.3 percent (4-12) from three point range.
Leading the way for the Lions was Jones with 16 points, Hartzog finished with 12, and Dinyer with 10. Both Hartzog and Jones led the way on the boards with seven and Sharp pulled down four.
Next up for Missouri Southern is Northeastern State at Robert Corn Court inside The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. Tip off is scheduled for 1pm.
