St. Charles, Mo. - Nic Hartzog set a new career high of 30 points Thursday night as the Missouri Southern Lions (10-4, 4-3 MIAA) downed host Lindenwood Lady Lions (7-7, 1-7 MIAA) 79-70 inside Hyland Arena.
Just 362 days after she hit a career high 26 points against Lincoln in Joplin, Hartzog poured in 30 inside Hyland Arena in St. Charles to lead the Lions to the 79-70 win. She finished 10-14 from the floor and 8-10 from the charity stripe while pulling down six rebounds, one shy of tying her season high. Hartzog also finished with a season high six steals as she led both teams in that category.
Southern got off to a fast start as Hartzog opened the scoring on a coast to coast rebound and layup, the Lions lead would get up to ten, 17-7, as Shawnee Phillips was fouled on a three point attempt and drained all three charities. Lindenwood answered with a 18-2 run to take a 25-19 lead with just over nine minutes left in the half. The Green & Gold would close the half on a 9-2 run as Jolee Sharp hit a jumper in the paint with seven seconds left to send Southern into the locker room with the 32-30 lead.
On the half Southern shot just 28.6 percent (10-35) from the floor while allowing Lindenwood to shoot 41.4 percent (12-29). Hartzog led all scorers with 14 points at the half, Phillips added six, and Sharese Jones had four.
The second half started where the Lions left off as Southern would add to their 9-2 run with a 6-2 run after a pair of free throws from Hartzog to take a 38-32 lead with just over 17 minutes to play. Southern's lead would grow to as much as 12, 49-37, after a three point play by Jones at the 15 minute media time out. Lindenwood would answer with a 13-2 run over the next six minutes to get the lead down to three at 53-50 with 9:36 to play. From there Hartzog and Jones would go to work as they combined for 20 points (14 for Hartzog, six for Jones) as Southern came away with the nine point victory.
Hartzog led all scorers with her career high 30and Jones added 23, just six off her career high. Hartzog led Southern in rebounding with six, while Jones, Jordan Dinyer, and Sharp all pulled down five each.
The Lions will be back in action this Saturday as they travel to Jefferson City to take on the Lincoln Blue Tigers in a 1:30 pm game.
