Joplin's Charlie Brown scores 13; MSSU men defeat Lincoln

The Missouri Southern men's basketball team led 44-27 at the half and held on to defeat Lincoln University today inside Jason Gym in Jefferson City. 
The Lions (11-6, 5-3 MIAA) were led offensively by freshman Charlie Brown as the Joplin native scored 13 points off the bench. He went 4-7 from the field, 2-2 from long range and 3-6 from the free-throw line. Austin Wright scored 12 points on 4-5 from long range, while Greg Renfroe added 11 and Taevaunn Prince andBrandon Pines scored ten each. Lane Barlow had a team-high five rebounds and four assists. 
Lincoln (4-13, 1-7 MIAA) had two score in double-figures, led by 19 points from Josh Buie. Jeremy Jackson had 13 points. 
Southern started strong and led 13-8 after a jumper from Prince with 14:58 left in the first half. The lead was 11 (18-7) after a three from Blaine Miller with 12:20 to go, and a pair of free throws from Renfroe pushed the advantage to 18 (29-11) with 8:03 left. A jumper from Pines with 1:27 left to go in the half kept the lead at 18 (41-23) and a three from Cameron Cornelius as time expired gave the Lions a 44-27 lead at the break. 
A three-point play from Prince with 18:42 left in the game gave the Lions a 20-point lead (47-27) at the start of the second half, and the lead was 21 after a three-point play from Renfroe with 15:24 to go. A three from Wright with 14:55 left made the score 59-36 and a free throw from Brown with 6:17 to go gave the Lions their largest lead of the game (24) at 79-55. 
A layup from Morgan Smith with 4:05 left gave the Lions a 22 point lead (82-60), but despite a late run from Lincoln, the Lions held on for the win. 
The Lions shot 53 percent from the field and 52 percent from long-range, while shooting 75 percent from the free throw line. 
Southern will be back in action this Wednesday (Jan. 21) when the Lions play host to Northwest Missouri. Tip off from Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center is slated for 7:30 pm.
