Late run lifts MSSU women to 60-59 win over Northwest Missouri

An 18-6 run by the Missouri Southern women's basketball team over the final 8:28 of the game lifted the Lions to a 60-59 win over visiting Northwest Missouri on Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. 
During that late run for Southern, (12-4, 6-3 MIAA) all 18 points were scored by Shawnee Phillips (13) and Nicole Hartzog (5). Phillips finished the night tying a career-high with 17 points on 4-6 from the field and 3-5 from long-range. She added five rebounds. Sharese Jones scored 12 and added 11 boards for her fifth double-double of the season, while Hartzog added 11 points, three assists and three steals. 
Northwest (6-13, 2-8 MIAA) was led by 27 points from Ariel Easton. Tember Schechinger scored ten and added ten boards. 
The Bearcats opened up a six point lead early on after a layup from Shelby Mustain made the score 13-7 with 14:52 left to go in the half. A layup from Jensen Maydew cut the lead to just two (13-11) and a bucket from Maydew the next trip down made the score 15-13, Northwest with 11:11 left.
Northwest opened up a nine point lead (28-19) after a pair of free throws with 6:19 to go, but a 7-0 run from the Lions, capped by a three from Jordan Dinyer with 4:02 left made the score 28-26. The Lions went into the locker room, trailing 35-31 at the break. 
Jones led the Lions with nine points at the half, adding six rebounds in the process and going 5-6 from the free-throw line. 
Northwest led by as many as 12 in the second half (53-41) after a layup with nine minutes to go, but that was when the Lions made their move. Southern went on a 9-0 run to make the score 53-52 capped off by a pair of freebies from Phillips with 6:10 left.
The Bearcats led by five (57-52) with 4:38 to go, but the Lions went on a 6-0 run to go ahead by one (58-57) after a three from Phillips. A pair of freebies from Hartzog with 28 seconds left put Southern up again 60-59. 
Northwest had two more possessions in the game, but a missed shot and a forced turnover secured the win for the Lions. 
The Lions' bench out scored Northwest 29-11 and Southern scored 22 points off of 17 forced turnovers. 
Southern will be back in action this Saturday when the Lions travel to St. Joseph to take on Missouri Western. Tip off is slated for 1:30 pm.
