Lindenwood scores last six points to down MSSU men 63-58

A 6-0 run for Lindenwood to end the game lifted the home team over visiting Missouri Southern 63-58 tonight inside Hyland Arena.

Southern (10-6, 4-3 MIAA) was led offensively by Cameron Cornelius who scored 21 points on 8-17 shooting, while adding seven rebounds. Lane Barlow scored 14 points and pulled down five boards, while Taevaunn Prince had eight points and a team-high eight rebounds. Greg Renfroe had four points, five rebounds and six blocks.

Lindenwood (10-6, 6-2 MIAA) won its sixth game in a row and was led by Darris Smith with 20 points. Cory Artensen had 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Both teams traded points early in the first half, but an 8-0 run by Southern gave MSSU a 20-15 lead with seven minutes to go after a layup from Barlow. The game was tied at 22 when a jumper from Renfroe put Southern back on top 24-22 with 5:09 left. A pair of free throws and a jumper from Cornelius put Southern up 28-22 with 3:26 left in the half, and MSSU led 34-28 at the half.

The two teams stayed close throughout the first part of the second half, with Southern holding no more than a five-point lead over Lindenwood. LWU, however, took a three-point lead (48-45) with 7:28 left on a layup from Garrett Reeg.

Lindenwood led 56-52 with 4:14 left in the game, but the Lions re-took the lead at 58-57 on a layup from Prince with 1:42 left. That would be the last points MSSU scored in the game as Lindenwood scored the game's final six points to secure the win.

Southern out rebounded Lindenwood 41-38 and held a 28-26 advantage in the paint. MSSU scored 13 points off of 10 Lindenwood turnovers.

Southern will be back in action this Saturday when the Lions travel to Jefferson City to take on Lincoln. Tipoff is slated for 3:30 pm.
