Late scoring lifts Pittsburg State baseball to win over MSSU

Pittsburg, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth, but couldn't hold on and the Lions fell 7-4 at Pittsburg State University this afternoon.

Southern (23-21, 11-19 MIAA) got two hits each from Alex Phillips, Denver Coffee and Danny Biggs. Coffee, Biggs, Johnny Balsamo and Easton Fortuna had RBIs, while Philliips, Coffee, Joe Kinder and Jordan Moonscored a run each.

Joey Reeves started and went two innings. River Wright, Bradly Hershey, Seth Mesey, Cam Bednar, Logan VanWey, Cory Cowan and Brennon Covington threw in relief. Bednar took the loss, falling to 2-3 on the season.

PSU (28-14, 20-10 MIAA) got a win in relief from Andy Pagnozzi.

Pitt went on top with a run in the first, but the Lions answered with a run in the fourth and sixth. Coffee scored on an error in the fourth, while Balsamo drove in Kinder in the sixth.

The Gorillas scored four in the bottom of the sixth to go up 5-2 and added another two runs in the eigth to lead 7-2 going to the ninth.

The Lions threatened with two runs in the ninth, but left the bases loaded. Coffee walked to drive in Moon, and then Biggs singled home Phillips for the other run.

The Lions will be in action this weekend as they play a three-game series at Central Missouri beginning on Friday at 6 pm.
