Crowder soccer player named 1st Team Region 16

Crowder College Roughrider Soccer Player Daniel Ost (Santa Rosa, Brazil) was named 1st Team Region 16 in Division I Men’s Soccer.

Ost started all 17 games as goalkeeper for the Roughriders with 73 saves and 7 shutouts on the season.

“Daniel has been the heart of our defense for the past two years. He has been among the national leaders in many statistical categories and a large portion of our success can be attributed to his play,” stated Coach Brad Smith.

Crowder College’s Soccer program began in 2008 as an NJCAA Division I sport.

Cardinals hire Mike Maddux as pitching coach

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today the hiring of Mike Maddux as the team’s Pitching Coach and promotion of triple-A Memphis Pitching Coach Bryan Eversgerd to the Cardinals Bullpen Coach for the 2018 season. Today’s announcement rounds out the team’s Major League coaching staff for 2018.

“We are very excited to welcome Mike to the Cardinals organization,” stated Cardinals’ President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak. “We also look forward to giving Bryan Eversgerd a well-deserved opportunity on our Major League staff.”

(Note: Maddux has been pitching coach for the Washington Nationals. Eversgerd is a former Cardinals reliever.)

Joplin to play host to USA Table Tennis sanctioned tournament

For the first time in history, Joplin is a host site for a USA Table Tennis (USATT) Sanctioned Tournament! This tournament is organized by the Joplin Table Tennis Club (JTTC), which was established in 2014.

The event will be on Saturday, November 4 at Memorial Hall, 212 W. 8th Street in Joplin. Joplin Table Tennis Club is affiliated with USA Table Tennis and has already held six USATT Non-Sanctioned Tournaments with participation by local and surrounding states. Prize money totals $750 for this tournament.

“We are hoping this sanctioned tournament will bring more players and visitors to Joplin which will also benefit local businesses,” said Janus Lazarus, President of the Joplin Table Tennis Club. “We are excited at the opportunity to share this historic event with Joplin and encourage interested citizens to participate in our tournament. We also welcome spectators to the tournament. It is really fun to watch these players at such high-skill levels.”

Admission is free of charge to spectators.

The Series: Central Missouri holds the all-time series lead against the Lions at 21-15-2. The Lions have an 8-9-1 record at Hughes Stadium against the Mules, while the Lions are just 7-12-1 in Warrensburg. Central has won 15 out of the last 19 meetings. Southern defeated the Mules in 2006 and 2013, both games at home. From 1983-1996, the Lions were 7-2 against the Mules.

The Dish On The Mules: Central Missouri comes into the game ranked 24th in the d2football.com poll and receiving votes in the coaches poll. The Mules are 4-2 and have wins over Pittsburg State, Missouri Western, Emporia State and Nebraska Kearney with losses to Fort Hays State and Northwest Missouri. Brook Bolles leads the offensive attack for the Mules as the quarterback has thrown for 1,778 yards on 126-235 passing and ten touchdowns, but also has seven interceptions. He has ran the ball 67 times for 193 yards and three scores. Devante Turner and Koby Wilkerson split time at running back as they both have nearly equal reps with Turner sporting 448 yards rushing and five touchdowns, while Wilkerson has 346 yards and three scores. Jaylen Zachery has 420 receiving yards on 28 receptions, while Kyrion Parker has 19 receptions for 367 yards and four touchdowns. Seth HEbert has 19 catches and two scores, as well. Defensively, Codie Bell has a team-high 33 tackles with 23 solo and four pass break ups. Alex Lackey has 29 tackles and 1.5 sacks, while Dylan Albertson has 27 stops and two sacks. Monteze Latimore has 27 stops and an interception. As a team, Central Missouri is averaging 475 yards per game of total offense and giving up 374. The Mules will be back on the road next week as they travel to Washburn.

A Victory vs. Central Missouri Would: be just the fifth in the last 21 meetings with the Mules. It would bring the season series to 21-16-2 in favor of the Mules.

NFL Representation: The Lions will have two different players on NFL rosters to start the season. Brandon Williams is a starter on the defensive line for the Baltimore Ravens, while Allen Barbre will be with the Denver Broncos this year.

Show Me The Money: Brandon Williams has become a leader on the defense for the Baltimore Ravens, as well as the NFL. In the offseason, Williams became the highest-paid nose tackle in the NFL and the eighth-highest paid defensive lineman when he signed a five-year, $54 million contract.

NFL Executive: Former Lion and former NFL wide receiver James Thrash is in his second season serving as the NFL and NFLPA's Appeals Officer. He hears all appeals for the NFL regarding on-field player discipline. Thrash played 12 seasons in the NFL for the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles.

Lions On Radio: The Lions will partner with ESPN Joplin this year as Southern can now be heard on three separate FM stations, as well as an AM station. ESPN Joplin will air the Lions' games on 101.3 and 103.5 FM, as well as AM 1560. MSSU's KXMS 88.7 will also simulcast the games giving the Lions a larger reach in the four-states than they've ever had.

Tough League/Region: The MIAA has two teams in the coaches top 25 this week. Northwest Missouri is 1st, while Fort Hays State is 8th. The Super Region Three, which the Lions are a part of, has seven teams in the top 25. There are 10 teams total that are either ranked or receiving votes in the poll from the region.

Lions On TV: Missouri Southern's KGCS will air every Lions home game live this year during the season. They will also re-broadcast the games on Sunday evenings at 7 pm.

NCAA Team Stats Rankings: Southern leads Division II in blocked punts allowed, while ranking fourth in fewest penalty yards and fifth in fewest penalties. The Lions rank 47th nationally in blocked kicks.

MIAA Team Stats Rankings: Southern leads the MIAA in blocked punts allowed and fewest penalty yards and fewest penalties. The team ranks fifth in blocked kicks and team tackles for a loss.

Individual Stats Rankings: Individually, Alexander Waderanks 56th nationally in solo tackles.

Roc(K) Steady: Roc Robbins had a heck of a good season opener with two sacks against Fort Hays. The sophomore had 3.5 tackles for a loss and two sacks.

Special Teams Success: The Missouri Southern special teams unit had a pretty good day against Nebraska-Kearney as the Lions got a blocked extra point from Mark Mudd, a blocked field goal from Carter Rees and a forced fumble from Brayden Scott that was recovered by Roc Robbins on fumble coverage.

Spread The Wealth: In three of the Lions' six games this year, the Lions have thrown passes to at least nine different individuals. Against Emporia State and Washburn, that number was seven and Northwest Missouri the number was eight.

Behind the Line: The Lions had eight tackles for a loss against Emporia State. Southern stopped the Hornets for a loss of 26 yards.

Big Man Jo: Josiah Bennett is averaging 13.0 yards percatch this season with two touchdowns.

All-Purpose Shemar: Freshman Shemar Coleman is averaging 101.2 yards in all-purpose yardage this year. He has 253 yards rushing, 166 receiving and 181 in kickoff returns.

Back In The Saddle: Brayden Scott made his first start at quarterback this season and had two touchdowns through the air and one on the ground at Washburn.

Weather Report: The weather report for the Warrensburg area on Saturday calls for a high of 85 and mostly sunny conditions with a 20 percent chance of showers.

MSSU soccer concludes road portion of schedule this weekend

MSSU Soccer travels for its final pair of matches outside of the state beginning with the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers on Friday, Oct. 13 at 2 pm followed by a meeting at Fort Hays State on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1 pm.

The Lions (1-8-2, 1-4) are looking to rebound after falling in overtime against Emporia State 3-2 at home after being up 2-0 heading into the second period. They will finish up the season with three of their final four matches of the regular season inside Hal Bodon Field, succeeding the trip to Nebraska and Kansas.

UNK (3-7-2, 0-5) heads into Friday's matchup on a five-game losing streak, but with two of its three wins inside Ron & Carol Cope Stadium. The team's latest match was a 3-1 loss at Northwest Missouri State last Sunday.

FHSU sits in a tie for second in the conference (7-3-2, 4-1) despite heading into Sundays afternoon contest with a .500 record at home. The Tigers are coming off a pair of wins over Missouri Western in double overtime (1-0) after defeating NWMSU two days prior (2-1).

MSSU soccer loses overtime thriller to Emporia State

Southern soccer had a 1-0 lead heading into halftime and added another to go up 2-0 in the second period, but could not hold on as the Emporia State Hornets answered with two goals in the second period and another one for the game winner in a 3-2 overtime victory inside Hal Bodon Field Sunday afternoon.

MSSU (1-8-2, 1-4) got on the board first after freshman Sarah Tatum moved past ESU's goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead to end the first period. Senior Brooke Ismael would add another goal eight minutes into the second period from outside the box that landed in the left corner of the goal for a 2-0 advantage for the Lions. Each goal was both players' first goal of the season.

Goalkeeper Luz Galindo played in all 91:21 minutes, making six saves in the process despite allowing three goals.

ESU (6-4-2, 2-2-1) found itself down 2-0, but began to chip away at MSSU's lead after a goal by Tanna Benfield broke the shutout in the 63rd minute and then was erased after Savannah Hallier tied the match up with a header in the 74th minute, sending the game into overtime (2-2).

Then in the first minute of OT, Hornets' Olivia Miller punched it in past the goalkeeper to complete the comeback victory for her team.

The Lions look to rebound as they hit the road for a 2 pm match with Nebraska-Kearney on Friday, Oct. 13, before taking on Fort Hayes State on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1 pm.

MSSU volleyball falls to Central Missouri in straight sets

Warrensburg, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team nearly pulled out the first set, but dropped a straight-set match at 20th ranked Central Missouri this afternoon. Individual set scores were 23-25, 18-25 and 17-25.

The Lions (9-11, 2-5 MIAA) were led by Alicia Pickett with 12 kills and a .333 attack average. Pickett added five blocks, as well. Mikayla Monk had eight kills and hit .381, while Janelle Brehm had a team-high 11 digs and Whitney Harrison added ten digs of her own. Morgan Nash dished out 24 assists and added nine digs, while Teryn Scott had nine digs, as well.

The Jennies (15-4, 6-1 MIAA) were led by Aubree Bell's 15 kills.

Set one saw three tied scores and two lead changes. Southern jumped out to a 7-3 lead and led again 11-10, before the Jennies tied it up at 11. The Lions led again 13-12, but a kill from Central Missouri's Kasey Hohlen, put the Jennies up on top 14-13 and they wouldn't look back.

The Jennies broke a 3-3 tie early on in the second set and led from there on out. The third set saw two ties and one lead change.

The Lions will be back in action next weekend as Southern travels to Emporia State on Friday and Washburn on Saturday.

MSSU women's cross country finishes 16th at Romeoville, Illinois meet

Romeoville, Ill. -- The Missouri Southern women's cross country team placed 16th today as the Lions competed at the Lewis University Conference Crossover in Romeoville, Ill.

Ashlee Kuykendall paced the Lions as the freshman finished 34th individually with a time of 22:35.2 over the 5k course. Sierra Wells placed 84th with a time of 23:25.1, while Christian Provence was 115th in a time of 23:49.9.

Sarah Usher finished 121st with a time of 23:53.2, while Danielle Prince was 136th in a time of 24:00.3. Shelby Werner was 190th in a time of 24:42.2, and Gabriel Hillplaced 198th with a time of 24:42.2. Mady Gepford finished in a time of 24:59.00, while Abbi Rogers finished in a time of 25:01.80.

Julianna Determan finished in a time of 25:19.3, while Layne Karhoff crossed the finish line in a time of 26:04.9. Sara Lin finished in a time of 26:27.5.

The women's race featured 359 runners and 34 teams. The Lions were 16th overall as Cal Baptist took home the team title, followed by Grand Valley State, Alaska-Anchorage, Walsh and Hillsdale to round out the top five team scores.

Southern will be back in action in two weeks as the Lions will travel to Warrensburg to compete in the 2017 MIAA Cross Country Championships.

MSSU men's cross country places ninth at Lewis Conference Crossover

Romeoville, Ill. -- The 20th ranked Missouri Southern men's cross country team got a ninth-place individual finish from Nickson Kiptoo and the Lions placed ninth as a team at the Lewis Conference Crossover In Romeoville, Ill.

In a meet that featured four of the top 11 teams nationally and eight teams from the top-25, the Lions held their own, placing ninth as a team.

Nickson Kiptoo led the way for the Lions as the sophomore finished the 8k race in a time of 25:11.2 in ninth place, individually. Tyler Rush was 47th in a time of 25:49.8, while Cody Berry was right behind in 48th in a time of 25:50.8. Josh Webb was 84th in a time of 26:18.6, while Tadd Capron was 87th in a time of 26:22.1.

Mike Shanahan placed 90th in a time of 26:22.1, while Jared Ozee finished the race in a time of 27:20.4. Nathan Painter finished in a time of 27:36.9, while Trevor Shank crossed the finish line in a time of 28:12.7. Ryan Drendelfinished i a time of 28:48.6.

The Lions finished ninth as a team. Third-ranked Grand Valley won the race, while number nine Cal Baptist placed second. Number six Southern Indiana was third, followed by Lindenwood, number 11 Lewis, number 13 Alaska-Anchorage, Walsh, Academy of Art, the Lions and number 25 Malone to round out the top ten teams.

Southern will be back in action in two weeks as the Lions will travel to Warrensburg to compete in the 2017 MIAA Cross Country Championships.

Three Scott touchdown passes not enough as MSSU falls to Washburn 49-21

Topeka, Kan. -- Making his first start behind center of the season, Brayden Scott accounted for three touchdown passes and had the Lions within one touchdown twice, but 21 unanswered points in the second half led the Washburn Ichabods to a 49-21 victory over the Lions Saturday.

Southern (0-6, 0-6 MIAA) was led offensively by Scott as the junior went 13-25 for 169 yards and two touchdowns, while running for 27 yards and another score. Dante Vandeven, getting his first action at wide receiver caught a 50-yard pass to set up a touchdown and finished with three catches for 60 yards.

Shemar Coleman had 12 rushes for 42 yards and three receptions for 38 yards with a touchdown, while Josh Hadley had 38 yards on nine carries. Deuzae Johnsoncaught two passes, including a score.

Defensively, the Lions were led by Carter Rees with 13 tackles, including one for a loss. Roc Robbins and EJ McKenzie had ten tackles each, while Alexander Wadehad nine and Akel Beard had eight. The Lions had five tackles behind the line of scrimmage and stopped both of Washburn's fourth-down attempts.

The Ichabods (5-1, 5-1 MIAA) saw Blake Peterson go 15-25 for 287 yards and three scores, while Zach Willis had 106 yards on the ground and two scores. Mickeel Stewart had a rushing touchdown of his own. DJ Olmstead had one of three interceptions on the day for Washburn, one of which he returned 20 yards for a score.

Washburn led 14-0 after one quarter, but the Lions got a rushing touchdown from Scott to cut the lead in half with 11:08 left in the second quarter and Scott hooked up with Johnson for a 17-yard passing touchdown to make the score 21-14 at the half.

The Ichabods scored on a 14-yard touchdown run from Willis to open up the second half. But after a big defensive stop from the Lions on fourth down, Southern ran a quick two-play, 35-yard drive culminating in a 24-yard touchdown pass from Scott to Coleman to make the score 28-21, Washburn.

That was as close as the Lions would get as Washburn closed the game ona 21-0 run.

Southern will be back on the road next weekend as the Lions travel to Central Missouri to face the Mules. Kickoff from Walton Stadium is slated for 1:30 pm.

Southern volleyball falls to Lindenwood in three sets

St. Charles, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team ran into a hot-hitting Lindenwood squad and fell three sets to none on the road at Lindenwood tonight. Individual set scores were 21-25, 21-25 and 16-25.

The Lions (9-10, 2-4 MIAA) were led offensively by Mikayla Monk with ten kills and a .533 attack average. Bailey Rexford had seven kills, while Janelle Brehm had a team-high ten digs. Morgan Nash dished out 26 assists and added eight digs.

Lindenwood (11-8, 3-3 MIAA) was led by Emily Wylie and Alex Dahlstrom with nine kills each.

In set one, Lindenwood rushed out to a 4-1 lead and led from then on out.

In set two, the teams fought through 15 tied scores and five lead changes. Southern led 15-13 midway through and led again 19-17 late. Lindenwood, however, fought back and tied the set at 20 and went ahead 21-20 en route to the set win.

Set three saw four ties and one lead change as Lindenwood went ahead 5-4 early and led from then on out.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as Southern travels to 20th ranked Central Missouri. First-serve is set for 4 pm.

MSSU soccer falls to Ichabods 1-0

The Southern soccer team out-shot Washburn 10-7, but could not punch it in past the goalkeeper as they would fall to the Ichabods 1-0 inside Hal Bodon Field Friday night.

The Lions (1-7-2, 1-3) allowed only two shots on goal with one finding its way in the back of the net to be down by one heading into the half. They forced pressure on WU's goalkeeper the entire game, allowing them to get three more corner kick opportunities (4-1) than the Ichabods.

Taylor Beck led the team in shots with three, while Tayler LePage provided two shots with one on goal. Maria Sturluson added the other shot on goal for the Lions.

Goalkeeper Hannah Stevenson accumulated 90 minutes of playing time while making one save and holding Washburn to one goal.

WU (6-5-1, 2-2) went on top with a goal in the 41st minute by Ellie Karloff for her fifth goal of the season, which would end up as the deciding goal.

The Lions will look to rebound when they face Emporia State on Sunday at 1 pm to conclude Alumni Weekend inside Hal Bodon Field.

MSSU volleyball to play Lindenwood, Central Missouri

The Missouri Southern volleyball team heads to Lindenwood on Friday and 20th-ranked Central Missouri on Saturday in MIAA volleyball action.

Southern is 9-9 overall and 2-3 in the MIAA and sit in a four-way tie for sixth place in the MIAA standings with Washburn, Emporia State and Lindenwood.

The Lions are 12th nationally and third in the MIAA in total team blocks this season. Freshman outside hitter Janelle Brehm is third nationally and leads the MIAA in total attacks, while ranking 11th nationally and second in the MIAA in attacks per set and 29th nationally in total kills. Sophomore blocker Alicia Pickett is fifth nationally and second in the MIAA in total blocks and 19th nationally and tops in the MIAA in blocks per set. Morgan Nash ranks 20th nationally and fourth in the MIAA in total assists.

Lindenwood comes into the weekend matches 10-8 overal and 2-3 in MIAA play and have won two in a row with wins last weekend at Emporia State and Washburn.

Central Missouri is ranked 20th in Division II and is 13-4 overall and 4-1 in the MIAA, tied for second place. The Jennies have won seven of their last eight matches.

Southern cross country teams to compete in Chicago

The Missouri Southern men's and women's cross country teams will head to Chicago Saturday to compete in the GLVC/MIAA crossover hosted by Lewis University at the Lewis XC Course.

The women will run a 6k race at 10 am and the men will run an 8k race at 10:45 am.

The Southern men come into the race ranked second in the NCAA Central Region and 22nd nationally by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Southern women are ranked ninth in the Central region.

After this race, the Lions will have a week off before they compete in the 2017 MIAA Championships hosted by Central Missouri.

Mixed martial arts event scheduled at MSSU to benefit Darin Moore family

Missouri Southern men's, women's basketball teams drop out of Puerto Rico Classic

The Missouri Southern men's and women's basketball programs have announced its scheduled trips to Puerto Rico to compete in the 2017 Puerto Rico Classic over Thanksgiving week has been cancelled due to the devastation that the island has suffered after Hurricane Maria.

The teams were slated to be in Puerto Rico from November 20-25 and play three games each. Those games will not be played this year, but both teams intend to make the trip in 2018.

All money that was donated to the programs to help fund the trip will be retained and utilized for the trip to Puerto Rico in 2018.

The MSSU women have scheduled two games to replace the three they are losing. The Lions will take on Ottawa on November 25 at 3 pm and will play Avilla at 3 pm on November 26. Both games will be played at home inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

The Southern men are working with some of the teams that were also slated to go on the Puerto Rico trip to try and arrange a tournament to be played in Sioux Falls, SD over the same weekend (Nov. 25 & 26). Arrangements for that will be finalized and announced pending a waiver being filed with the NCAA to let the teams involved play more than the maximum games allowed by NCAA rules.

The Series: The Ichabods lead the series between the two teams at 23-21-1. The Lions hold an 11-10-1 mark at Hughes Stadium and a 10-13 mark in Topeka. Southern last defeated the Ichabods in 2014 when the Lions won 42-21 at home. Washburn had won eight in a row before the Lions' win last season.From 1989 to 1997, the Lions won nine games in a row in a stretch that included ten of 11, as well.

The Dish On The Ichabods: Washburn comes into the game with the Lions receiving votes in the AFCA poll and ranked 25th in the d2football.com poll. The Ichabods have one loss to No. 1 ranked Northwest Missouri, but have wins over Northeastern State, Lindenwood, Nebraska-Kearney and Pittsburg State. Blake Peterson leads the offense for the Ichabods and the quarterback is 63-115 for 648 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions. He also has carried the ball 42 times for 167 yards. Mickeel Stewart has 56 carries for 290 yards and five scores, while Zach Willis has 29 carries for 223 yards and two touchdowns. Carey Woods is Peterson's favorite target through the air, catching 19 passes for 181 yards and three scores. Jace Williams has 12 receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns, while James Brania-Hopp has 11 catches for 113 yards and a score. Defensively, Derrick McGreevy is the leading tackler for the Ichabodds with 60 tackles, including two and a half for a loss and two pass break ups. Peter Pfannestiel has 35 tackles and is one of four Ichabods with a team-high 1.5 sacks, while DJ Olmstead has 22 tackles including three interceptions. He also has 90 return yards on interceptions. As a team, the Ichabods average 338.6 yards of total offense per game and give up 333.2 yards per game. They have out scored their opponents by a margin of 166-91. Washburn will be back in action next week as the Ichabods will be at Fort Hays State.

A Victory vs. Washburn Would: be two in the last four against the Ichabods. It would nearly even the series between the two teams, but would be just the second win in the last 13 games against Wasbhburn.

NFL Representation: The Lions will have two different players on NFL rosters to start the season. Brandon Williams is a starter on the defensive line for the Baltimore Ravens, while Allen Barbre will be with the Denver Broncos this year.

Show Me The Money: Brandon Williams has become a leader on the defense for the Baltimore Ravens, as well as the NFL. In the offseason, Williams became the highest-paid nose tackle in the NFL and the eighth-highest paid defensive lineman when he signed a five-year, $54 million contract.

NFL Executive: Former Lion and former NFL wide receiver James Thrash is in his second season serving as the NFL and NFLPA's Appeals Officer. He hears all appeals for the NFL regarding on-field player discipline. Thrash played 12 seasons in the NFL for the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles.

Lions On Radio: The Lions will partner with ESPN Joplin this year as Southern can now be heard on three separate FM stations, as well as an AM station. ESPN Joplin will air the Lions' games on 101.3 and 103.5 FM, as well as AM 1560. MSSU's KXMS 88.7 will also simulcast the games giving the Lions a larger reach in the four-states than they've ever had.

Tough League/Region: The MIAA has two teams in the coaches top 25 this week. Northwest Missouri is 1st, while Fort Hays State is 11th. The Super Region Three, which the Lions are a part of, has eight teams in the top 25. There are 12 teams total that are either ranked or receiving votes in the poll from the region.

Lions On TV: Missouri Southern's KGCS will air every Lions home game live this year during the season. They will also re-broadcast the games on Sunday evenings at 7 pm.

Lions On The Web: All of MSSU's football games are carried live online as part of the MIAA Network. Fans can go to www.mssulions.com to view live and on-demand games.

Streaming Options: Fans now have even more options to view the Lions online in their homes and on the road. Not only can you view on your computer, fans can now view The MIAA Network on its over the top apps for either Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku and Android TV.

NCAA Team Stats Rankings: Southern leads Division II in blocked punts allowed, while ranking fifth in fewest penalty yards allowed and sixth in fewest penalties. The team also ranks 31st nationally in blocked kicks. Within the MIAA, the Lions lead the league in blocked punts allowed and fewest penalties/penalty yards.

Individual Stats Rankings: Individually, Alexander Waderanks 50th nationally in total tackles, while Carson Dayranks second in the MIAA in kickoff returns. Roc Robbinsranks fourth in the MIAA in fumble recoveries.

Roc(K) Steady: Roc Robbins had a heck of a good season opener with two sacks against Fort Hays. The sophomore had 3.5 tackles for a loss and two sacks.

Special Teams Success: The Missouri Southern special teams unit had a pretty good day against Nebraska-Kearney as the Lions got a blocked extra point from Mark Mudd, a blocked field goal from Carter Rees and a forced fumble from Brayden Scott that was recovered by Roc Robbins on fumble coverage.

Spread The Wealth: In three of the Lions' five games this year, the Lions have thrown passes to at least nine different individuals. Against Emporia State, that number was seven and Northwest Missouri the number was eight.

Behind the Line: The Lions had eight tackles for a loss against Emporia State. Southern stopped the Hornets for a loss of 26 yards.

Big Man Jo: Josiah Bennett is averaging 13.0 yards per catch this season with two touchdowns.

All-Purpose Shemar: Freshman Shemar Coleman is averaging 101.8 yards in all-purpose yardage this year. He has 211 yards rushing, 128 receiving and 163 in kickoff returns.

MIAA Preseason Polls: The MIAA released its preseason polls as part of its annual Media Day on August 2. The Lions were picked 11th in the coaches poll and tenth in the media poll.

Weather Report: The weather report for the Topeka area on Saturday calls for a high of 76 and partly cloudy conditions with a ten percent chance of showers.

Up Next: Southern will be on the road on the road again as the Lions travel to Central Missouri for a matchup with the Mules on October 14. Kickoff from Walton Stadium is slated for 1:30 pm.

MSSU soccer to play Washburn, Emporia State this weekend

Joplin, Mo. - After securing its first win of the season, the Southern soccer team returns home for Alumni Weekend as they take on Washburn University on Friday, Oct. 6 at 6 pm and Emporia State on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1 pm inside Hal Bodon Field.

The Lions stand at 1-6-2, 1-2 after sealing their first victory of season in a 1-0 shutout victory over Northwest Missouri State University last Sunday. Karissa Serna put MSSU in front with the first goal of her career as she became the fifth player on the team to provide a score this season.

WU (5-4-1, 1-2) comes into Friday night's game on a two-game losing streak after dropping both games at home over the weekend. However, the Ichabods have been better on the road accumulating a 2-0-1 record, including two shutouts.

ESU (4-4-2, 0-2-1) enters Sundays contest on a five-game winless streak with three losses and two ties to its credit. Despite the Hornets' latest struggles, all four of their wins have come away from home.

Serna goal leads MSSU soccer to 1-0 win over Northwest Missouri

Maryville, Mo. - Despite being out-shot 11-7 (24-9 total) and 6-1 (10-1 total) on goal in the first period, that one shot between the pipes by freshman midfielder Karissa Serna turned out to be the difference as Missouri Southern went on to defeat the Northwest Missouri Bearcats, 1-0, inside Bearcat Pitch Sunday afternoon.

Southern (1-6-2,1-2) snapped a four-game losing streak for its first win since a 1-0 home victory against Southwest Baptist last season (Oct. 28). It was also the team's first win at Maryville since 2012.

Serna recorded the first goal of her career to give MSSU a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of the match off a scramble for the ball within the box. Maria Sturluson kept the pressure on with a team-leading three shots in the victory.

Goalkeeper Hannah Stevenson made 10 saves off of 23 shots faced to secure the shutout win, improving to 1-4-1 on the year.

Northwest Missouri (4-5-0, 1-2) pushed the tempo to force 16 fouls on the Lions, but could not capitalize, dropping to 1-3 at home after a 6-0 shutout against Southwest Baptist two days ago.

Bearcats' Emily Madden led NWMSU with five shots and three shots on goal, while Kayla Ellis and Bria Wawiorka each added four shots without any luck.

The Lions return home to take on Washburn inside Hal Bodon Field to kickoff Alumni Weekend at 6 pm.
