The Missouri Southern soccer program has been picked to finish 11th in the 2017 MIAA Preseason Women's Soccer Coaches poll, the league announced today.
The Lions finished 4-11 last year in head coach Chris McNaughton's first year at the healm. Southern finished 11th in the final 2017 standings.
MSSU returns 15 players from last season's roster, including eight starters and a few others that saw starts for the Lions. McNaughton will have 18 newcomers on the roster. Five seniors in Ronise Miller, Brooke Ishmael, Taylor Beck, Chloe Jackson and Anissa Williams all return to the fold to provide leadership for the Pride.
The Lions also bring in a new assistant coach to roam the sidelines as former Bethany College product Brooklynn Meinke joins McNaughton's coaching staff.
Central Missouri was the overwhelming favorite to win and repeat its title from a season ago. Central Oklahoma, Northeastern State, Fort Hays State and Lindenwood round out the top five in the poll. Missouri Western, Emporia State, Washburn, Nebraska-Kearney, Northwest Missouri, Southern and Southwest Baptist round out the poll.
The Lions open the regular season with home matches on September 1 and 3 against Rockhurst and William Jewell, respectively.
