Missouri Southern athletes excel in the classroom

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

A total of 192 student-athletes in the Missouri Southern Athletic Department earned a 3.00 or better cumulative grade point average at the conclusion of the Spring semester.

With that success, the athletic department boasted a cumulative GPA of 3.08 as 12 of the 14 sports programs finished with cumulative team GPA's higher than 3.00.

The volleyball team had the highest GPA among programs with a 3.67 team GPA, while the men's golf program had the highest GPA among men's programs at 3.25.

With those 192 GPA's above 3.0, 98 student-athletes had a 3.5 GPA or higher and 24 had a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Thirty-six student-athletes participated in Spring Commencement ceremonies on May 12 with five student-athletes graduating Summa Cum Laude, one graduating Magna Cum Laude and three graduating Cum Laude. Along with the December graduates, a total of 63 student-athletes earned a degree from Missouri Southern this academic year.

Along with volleyball and golf, baseball (3.07), men's track and field/xc (3.10), softball (3.47), women's basketball (3.04), soccer (3.18) and women's track and field/xc (3.58) all had GPA's above 3.00.

"The true measure of a student-athlete is their ability to compete both in their sport and in the classroom," said Athletic Director Jared Bruggeman. "This is a testament to the hard work that each and every one of our student-athletes has put in day after day and I can't forget our coaching staff that place a priority on academics."
