Missouri Southern junior Stephen Atkinson has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court, the organization announced today.
A record number 895 student-athletes from 338 colleges and universities earned NABC Honors Court distinction. In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows:
1. Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player.
2. Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic year.
3. Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.
4. Member of an NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach.

Atkinson maintains 3.48 GPA in biology. He was a member of the MIAA Commissioner's Academic Honor roll this season and helped the Lions to a 25-6 record, the 2014 MIAA Tournament Championship, and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. The team finished the season ranked 19th nationally and its only three losses in the final month and a half of the season came to the eventual Division II National Champions.
Atkinson is one of 13 MIAA men's basketball players to be given this honor.
