Registration for Youth Developmental Soccer planned

It’s time to lace up those cleats for the Youth Developmental Soccer Program. Starting on Monday, August 25, the Joplin Parks and Recreation Department will kick off the youth soccer program at Hershewe Soccer Complex at the Joplin Athletic Complex.

Registration is open through Monday, August 3 for this fall sport. Fees for the program are $34 per player, with each player receiving a wicking cool mesh jersey, shorts, socks, and soccer ball.
Kids will be split into four divisions, six up, eight up, ten up, and twelve up. Teams will play a six game regular season. Eight, ten, and twelve up will have a post season single elimination tournament. First and second place in each divisions post season tournament will receive an award. The six up division participants will receive participation medals at the end of the season.

Games start August 25. Head and assistant coaches are still needed. The coaches and players clinic will be hosted by the National Premier Soccer League Coaches and Players. Date of the clinic will be announced once details are finalized.

Joplin, Webb City athetes included on MSSU baseball 2016 recruiting class

Missouri Southern baseball coach Bryce Darnell has announced the program's 2016 recruiting class. The list includes six junior college transfers, five NCAA Division I transfers and five high school athletes.

Three of the five high school athletes are from Southwest Missouri with two coming from the Joplin metro area.

Below are short bios of each of the student-athletes joining the Lions for the 2016 season.

Zach Litchen JR

L/L LHP 6'3'' 170 Home: Denton, TX Previous School: Hutchinson CC

Zach has pitched the last two years at Hutchinson CC. This past season Zach served the Blue Dragons as both a starter and a reliever. As a sophomore he was 5-0 with a 4.56 ERA in 6 starts and 13 total appearances. In 47.1 innings Zach allowed 48 hits and struck out 50 batters. He struck out a season high 12 batters vs Cloud CC. Zach is the son of Mike Litchen and Mary Kastens and is a Business major.
Trever Burkdoll JR
R/R IF 6'0'' 170 Home: Rantoul, KS Previous School: Neosho County CC

Trever started all 58 games at shortstop this past season for Neosho County CC. In 58 games he batted .303 AVG with 11 2B's, 3 HR's, and was 6 of 7 in stolen base attempts. Trever is the son of Tim and Phyllis Burkdoll and plans to major in General Business.
Hunter Harrison JR
R/R RHP 6'0'' 165 Home: Muskogee, OK Previous School: Connors State

Hunter has been primarily a relief pitcher for Connors State over the last two seasons. This past season he led the staff in appearances with 14 and was 2-0 with a 2.10 ERA and 2 saves. In 34.1 IP he allowed 33 hits, 15 walks, and 25 strikeouts. As a freshman Hunter was 5-1 with a 2.25 ERA and in 28 innings allowed 26 hits while striking out 20 batters. Hunter is the son of Jeff and Lori Harrison and is a Biology major.
Conner Matson JR

R/R RHP 5'11'' 170 Home: Oak Grove, MO Previous School: Maplewoods CC

Conner has led Maplewoods CC in appearances over the last two seasons while pitching primarily out of the Monarchs bullpen. This past season he was 2-2 with a 5.84 ERA in 15 appearances. He pitched 37 innings allowing 40 hits and struck out 38. As a freshman he was 1-4 with a 3.40 ERA with 45 innings pitched, allowing 41 hits, 17 BB, and striking out 46. Conner is the son of G.C. and Kim Matson and is a Nursing major.
Lane Ketterman SO

S/R OF 5'10'' 195 Home: Nevada, MO Previous School: Coffeyville CC

This past season as a freshman at Coffeyville CC Lane started 45 games in left and right field for the Ravens. Lane batted .295 with 3 2B's, 2 3B's, 2 HR's, and had 9 stolen bases. Lane is the son of Matt and Erin Ketterman and will major in Conservation and Ecology.

Drew Pearson JR

R/R C 6'2'' 200 Home: Cabool, MO Previous School: Crowder College

Drew has been a utility player for Crowder College the past two seasons. Over the past two seasons he saw time at catcher and first base for the Rough Riders. This past year he batted .220 in 80 at bats with 3 doubles and 1 homerun. Drew is the son of Mike and Becky Pearson and is a Business major.
Joe Paulino JR

R/R C 6'0'' 205 Home: Springdale, AR Previous: Univ. of Arkansas Little Rock

Joe has played in 60 games with 39 games started over the past two seasons for Arkansas Little Rock. As a sophomore Joe played in 26 games making 16 starts and had a .200 AVG with 1 2B and 1 HR in 60 at bats. In his freshman year he played in 34 games with 23 starts and had a .247 AVG with 23 hits and 5 2B's in 93 at bats. Joe is the son of Bruno and Amalia Paulino and is a Marketing major.
Hayden Steele SR

R/R IF 6'2'' 210 Home: St. Joseph, MO Previous: Univ. of Central Arkansas

Hayden transfers to Missouri Southern from University of Central Arkansas where saw time in 26 games and made 24 starts at third base. Hayden batted .260 in 77 AB's with 4 2B's, 1 HR, and 11 RBI's along with a .961 FLD%. Prior to last season he spent two years at Johnson County CC where his team had an appearance in the JUCO World Series. Hayden is the son of Michelle Linebach and David Steele and is a Health Promotion major.
Craig Larkin JR

L/L LHP 6'2'' 205 Home: Ottumwa, IA Previous: Illinois State University

Craig transfers to Missouri Southern from Illinois State where he pitched out of the bullpen for the Red Birds. This past year Craig made 7 appearances making 1 start, allowing 14 hits in 7 innings pitched and striking out 3. Prior to ISU Craig spent two seasons at Iowa Western CC where he saw significant time as a freshman before redshirting his sophomore year due to an injury. As a freshman at IWCC he led the staff with 52.2 innings pitched, going 6-0 with a 2.73 ERA and allowed 53 hits, 12 BB's, while striking out 56. Craig is the son of Chris and Teresa Larkin and is a Business major.
Cody Smith JR

R/R RHP 6'3'' 190 Home: Canton, IL Previous: Murray State University

Cody transfers to Missouri Southern from Murray State where he redshirted this past season. Prior to his time at Murray he spent two seasons at Blackhawk CC in Moline, IL where he was a two time NJCAA All-American. In his sophomore year Cody was 5-2 with a 1.75 ERA allowing 49 hits, 18 BB's, and fanning 41 batters in 46.1 innings pitched. As a freshman Cody was 7-0 with a 1.22 ERA allowing 27 hits, 20 BB's, and striking out 40 batters in 44.1 innings pitched. Cody is the son of Heather and Rob Beaty and is a General Studies major.
Austin Aspegren JR

R/R RHP 5'11'' 175 Home: Omaha, NE Previous: Arkansas State University

Austin spent this past season at Arkansas State University where he redshirted due to injury. Prior to Arkansas State he played two seasons at Garden City CC where he led the Broncbusters in appearances as a sophomore. As a sophomore he was 2-0 with 4 saves and a 3.12 ERA, allowing 20 hits, 14 BB's, and striking out 26 batters in a team leading 27 appearances. Austin is the son of Angela Hank and Jon Aspegren and is a Business major.
Colin Chandler FR

R/R UT 5'11'' 165 Home: Nixa, MO Previous School: Nixa High School

Colin comes to Missouri Southern from Nixa High School where he played SS for Coach Howard Greenwood. As a senior Colin batted .329 in 79 AB with 5 2B's, 18 runs scored, and a .436 OBP. Colin was voted unanimous 1st Team All COC Large Infield this past season. Chandler also played basketball at Nixa where he was a starting guard on the hardwood. Colin is the son of Tom and Donna Chandler and is a Kinesiology major.
Austyn Gooch FR

R/R RHP 6'0'' 220 Home: Olathe, KS Previous School: Olathe South H.S.

Austyn prepped at Olathe South High School where he played for Coach Perkins. In Austyn's senior year he helped the Falcons make it to the final four of the KSHSAA Playoffs. As a senior he was 3-3 with a 2.96 ERA, allowing 29 hits and striking out 25 in 28.1 IP. As a junior he was 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA, allowing 15 hits and striking out 17 in 22 IP. Austyn is the son of Keith and Lenora Gooch and is a Computer Science major.
Garan Stevens FR

R/R IF 6'0'' 180 Home: Thorndale, ON Previous School: Medway H.S. (CA)

Garan is an infielder from Medway High School in Thorndale Ontario. Garan plays for the Great Lakes Canadians club team and has done so for the past few years. Prior to the GLC's he played for the London Badgers of London, ON. In the summer following his junior year he was selected to play for Team Ontario in the Canada Summer Games. Stevens was also selected to participate in Tournament Twelve. Garan is the son of Blair and Lorri Stevens and is a Health Promotion major.
Austin Carter FR
R/R OF 5'11'' 170 Home: Webb City, MO Previous School: Webb City High School

Austin just finished his senior season at Webb City H.S. where he played baseball for Coach Taylor. As a senior Austin batted .364 with a .439 OBP and a .444 SLG%. Austin was 36-99 at the plate with 6 doubles, 1 triple, 19 runs scored, and 5 stolen bases. Over the past two seasons he has been a 1st Team All-COC Large selection in the outfield and was a unanimous 1st Team selection this past season. Carter was also a starting linebacker on the Webb City football team for Coach Roderique. Austin is the son of Rona Gayman and Mike Gayman, and David Carter.
Chris Leonardi FR

R/R IF 5'9'' 160 Home: Joplin, MO Previous School: Joplin High School

Chris has played the last four seasons at Joplin High School for former Lion Kirk Harryman. Chris has started for four years for the Eagles, four of which were at SS. This past year Chris batted .322 in 93 at bats with a .441 OBP, 30 hits, 4 2B's, 1 3B, and 22 stolen bases. Chris holds the school record for stolen bases at Joplin and is 49-51 SBA over the past two seasons. Leonardi was a 2nd Team All-Ozark Infielder as a senior and was a 1stTeam All-Ozark Infielder as a junior. Chris is the son of Joe and Christi Leonardi and is a Biology major.

Southern hires assistant women's basketball coach

Missouri Southern Women's basketball Head Coach Ronda Hubbard announced today that Kate Frazier has joined the coaching staff.

Kate comes to the Lions after finishing her playing career at MIAA rival Lincoln University in Jefferson City.

"I've known Kate for a long time and know that her outstanding reputation as a player in the MIAA is going to be an asset to our players and program. Not only just knowing what it takes to be successful in our league, but also what it takes to be an outstanding student," said Hubbard. "She is very familiar with all aspects of the MIAA in terms of the type of player that will succeed. She will be helping with travel, Community service and serving as our Academic Coordinator. I'm thrilled to have her on staff and feel very fortunate that we have such an astute person to fill this role."

While at Lincoln, Kate played in all 52 contests while starting 39 of them. She was an All MIAA Honorable Mentionand was second in field goal percentage in MIAA, 11th in blocked shots, 14th in offensive rebounding, and finished in the top 30 in scoring at 10.2/game. Kate also made the Dean's list all four semesters there while graduating Magna Cum Laude with a degree in business.

"I'm very exicted to join the staff of Missouri Southern. They have a great program and I'm ready to learn a lot under both Coach Hubbard and Coach Ressell. Knowing Coach Hubbard since the fifth grade it was always a dream of mine to work with her as a coach," said Frazier.

Kate started her collegiate playing career at nearby Northeastern Oklahoma A&M where she shot 54.8 percent from the field while pulling down 3.2 rebounds per contest for the Lady Norse during her sophomore season. That season she helped lead the Lady Norse to a 21-9 overall mark and a 13-5 conference finish. Kate helped the Lady Norse to a NJCAA Region 2 title her freshman season while they finished with 20+ wins in both seasons with Frazier at center.

Prior to joining NEO Kate prepped at Springfield's Glendale HS, where she was a three time letter winner and earned academic all-state honors. She also earned all-conference, all-district, and all-ozarks region honors for the Falcons on the volleyball court.

MSSU names interim softball coach

Missouri Southern Athletics Director Jared Bruggeman announced today that assistant softball coach Melissa Chmielewski has been promoted to interim head coach for the 2016 season.

"We are happy to bring in someone with a familiarity to the student athletes and Missouri Southern," Bruggeman said. "Melissa is an excellent coach and her knowledge and experience with our athletics program will be a great asset. We are excited to see her begin her collegiate head coaching career. Her willingness to step into this interim role is greatly appreciated as we look to return Missouri Southern softball to the top tier of the MIAA."

Chmielewski just completed her first season as an assistant coach with the Lions having come to Joplin after two years as the head coach at Eagan (Minn.) High School where she took a 1-19 program and complied a two-year record of 18-23 in the South Suburban Conference, which has produced the last two Minnesota high school state champions. While in charge of the EHS program Chmielewski coached two all-section player, four all-conference selections, and had nine scholar athletes. One of her ESH players is now currently playing at University of Wisconsin at Green Bay and one is at NCAA D3 St. Cate's in St. Paul.

Chmielewski was also an assistant coach for the Minnesota Sting Gold where she coached five players that continued their softball careers at the NCAA D1 level at North Dakota State, Minnesota, and Indiana State and seven players currently in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Prior to EHS Chmielewski was a graduate assistant at Minnesota State University at Moorhead, where she attained her master's degree in education leadership. While at MSU-M the Dragons finished 14-24, 5-18 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

"I would like to thank Jared Bruggeman for the opportunity to be the interim head coach. There are a lot of exciting things happening here at Southern right now and I'm honored to being a part of it all. I am looking forward to the girls getting back to campus and getting the season started, and couldn't be more proud to restablish the tradition of Missouri Southern softball," said Chmielewski.

Chmielewski played collegiately at NCAA D-I North Dakota State University where she played first base from 2007-10. Chmielewski was a two-time Summit League Player of the Year (2010 and 2008), a 2010 CoSIDA College Division first-team Academic All-American, a 2010 Summit League All-Tournament Team selection, a 2010 and 09 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Midwest Region first-team selection, a three time All-Summit League first-team selection, a 2008 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Midwest Region second-team selection, a three time NFCA Scholar Athlete, a 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team, a two-time Summit League Winter/Spring All-Academic selection, a two-time Summit League Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence selection, a 2007 Division I Independent Newcomer of the Year, and a 2007 All-Independent first-team selection.

Helping the Bison transition from D-II to D-I, Chmielewski, was a part of the four year period that saw NDSU go 142-85 overall and 47-14 in their first three years in the Summit League. Winning two Summit League titles, in 2009 and 10, Chmielewski and the Bison made two NCAA Regional appearances. In 2009, NDSU knocked off perennial power Oklahoma in the opening game of the Norman Regional and went on to advance to the Tempe, Ariz. Super Regional before falling to the defending WCWS champions, Arizona State, two games to none. In 2010 the Bison put up a 33-25 overall record, a 14-8 Summit League mark, while advancing to the Seattle Regional.

Chmielewski can be found all over the NDSU record books. She holds the records for most hits in a game, five, most RBIs in a game, eight, and most walks in a game, four. She also holds records in most home runs in a game with two and total bases in a game with 11. On the defensive side she holds the career record for most fielding chances with 1,415. She is in the top 10 in eight different offensive career categories for the Bison, including second in career home runs with 38. She also holds the career record in put outs with 1,310 to go along with her career mark in fielding chances.

A 2006 graduate of Centennial High School in Circle Pines, Minn., she also played hockey and was a hockey assistant coach for three years; two at Fargo (N.D.) North HS and one at Eagan HS. At Fargo North she helped the Spartans to a state championship and a third place finish.

Chmielewski graduated in 2010 from North Dakota State University with degrees in both physical education and health.

MSSU men's basketball adds transfer

Missouri Southern men's basketball coach Jeff Boschee has announced the addition of transfer DJ Feitl to his list of recruits for the 2015-16 season.

Feitl comes to Missouri Southern after a year at John Brown University. A 6-3 guard, Fietl will be a senior eligibility wise.

As a junior at JBU, Feitl was a second team All-SAC performer. He averaged 18.4 points per game, while shooting 45 percent from the field, 44 percent from long-range and 84 percent from the charity stripe. He also averaged 4.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game for JBU.

Feitl played two seasons at Saddleback (Calif.) JC where he helped the Gauchos reach back-to-back Orange Empire Conference championships. He helped the team to a 51-11 (.823) record over two seasons, appearing in 30 games as a sophomore, starting 25. He averaged 7.3 points per game and 1.7 rebounds per game. Shot 40 percent from behind the arc and 39.5 percent from the field.

Feitl graduated from Coppell High School (Texas) in 2011, where he played three years for head coach Brad Chasteen. He helped the Cowboys to a pair of conference championships and was named to the Academic Honor Roll, while earning two second team All-Conference honors.

Feitl is the son of Son of Dave Feitl and Marian Mcintyre. He is majoring in marketing at Southern. His father, Dave, played at Texas-El Paso, as well as in the NBA for five seasons for Houston, Golden State, Washington and New Jersey. He also played professionally in Europe.

"We feel very fortunate to be able to get a quality player like DJ this late in the recruiting process," Boschee said. "He is a very competitive and skilled basketball player and is a great addition to our basketball team.

MSSU men's, women's basketball among tops in attendance

The Missouri Southern men's and women's basketball programs ranked among the nation's best this year when it comes to filling up the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center each game.

Both men's and women's programs ranked in the top 13 nationally in attendance this year.

The Southern women ranked 11th nationally, as more than 21,000 fans watched the Lions at home this year. The team averaged 1,359 fans per game which ranked fifth in the MIAA as the league had four of the top ten teams nationally.

The men ranked 13th nationally as 24,000 fans went through the turnstiles at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center for an average of 1,858 per game. The team ranked fourth in the MIAA as Fort Hays and Central Missouri ranked third and fourth, respectively and Nebraska-Kearney was ninth.

It is the seventh-straight time the MIAA has led the way on the women’s side and sixth-straight time the MIAA has been a top the men’s. The MIAA women's teams averaged 1,172 per game which was more than 22 Division I conferences, while the men averaged 1,514 fans per game.

In comparison with other conferences in Division II, the MIAA men played a total of 194 games and had more than 293,000 fans at its games, while the Great Lakes Valley Conference played 40 more games and had nearly 100,000 less fans. On the women's side, the MIAA women played 192 games and saw 224,000 fans at its games, while the GLVC women played 202 games and had 113,000 less fans.
