Royals lose out: Beltran signs three-year deal with Yankees

You knew it had to be good to be true. The last remaining member of that great Royals outfield of Carlos Beltran, Johnny Damon, and Jermaine Dye heading back to Kansas City to finish his career.

It was a great story, but it is not going to happen.

With Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson leaving the Yankees, the team needed to make a big splash and it followed its free agent signings of Jacoby Ellsbury and Brian McCann today by signing Beltran to a three-year deal with $45 million.

Beltran played the last two years for the Cardinals and performed well, but with a need to find a place to play Matt Adams and with highly-touted outfielder Oscar Taveras arriving this year, the Cardinals were not going to give a three-year deal to a 37-year-old outfielder.
