-- Austin Wright was a perfect 8-8 from the field including a school-record 7-7 from behind the arc and the Lions had six score in double-figures in a 110-73 win over No. 22 Washburn today at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Southern (7-1, 2-0 MIAA) scores the most points in an MIAA game since the Lions had 111 in a 113-111 overtime loss at Nebraska-Omaha on February 25, 2010. It's the first time in 88 games that an opponent has put up 100 or more points in a game against Washburn. It's also the largest margin of victory in an MIAA game for the Lions since a 107-65 win over Lincoln in 2011.
Wright led all scorers with 23 points on the day. Jordan Talbert had 20 points, while Marquis Addison and Slim Magee had 13 points each. Greg Renfroe had 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Cameron Cornelius scored 12 points, as well.
Washburn (8-1, 1-1 MIAA) loses for the first time this season. The Ichabods had three score in double-figures led by 14 points from Kyle Wiggins.
Both teams traded baskets early on, but the Lions took a 23-22 lead on a layup from Cornelius with 9:12 left in the half and led from there out. A dunk from Talbert with 4:35 to go in the half made the lead eight (34-26), and a three from Wright made the lead nine (47-38) with ten seconds left and a last-second bucket from the Bods' Chris Deanes made the halftime score 47-40, Lions.
Southern led by 17 (64-47) after a pair of free-throws from Cornelius with 14:46 left in the second half, and the Lions led by 20 (78-58) with just under ten minutes to play. Southern went to work, and went on a 15-4 run and led by 31 (93-62) after back-to-back three's from Talbert and the Lions' lead reached 40 after the seventh three of the night from Wright gave the Lions a 110-70 lead with 1:10 left in the game.
The Lions shot 53 percent from the field and 55 percent from behind the arc, while shooting 77 percent from the free-throw line. Southern forced 19 turnovers, scoring 23 points off of the miscues and had a 42-38 advantage in the paint. Southern had a 27-11 advantage in fast-break points and the Lions' bench outscored Washburn's 46-29.
Southern will be back in action on December 17 when the Lions play host to Arkansas Tech at 7 pm at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
