Nash posts fifth triple-double to lead MSSU volleyball past Newman

Morgan Nash posted her fifth triple-double of the season to lead the Lions past visiting Newman, three sets to one tonight. Individual set scores were 24-26, 25-20, 25-22 and 25-16.

The Lions (12-10, 5-7 MIAA) posted 11 team blocks in the match. Nash had 13 kills, 11 assists and 11 digs, while Janelle Brehm had ten kills and eight digs. CC Pollard had ten kills, as well, while Brooklynn McCain had 15 digs. Alyssa Diaz and Makenzie Fa'amausili-Cacoulidis posed six blocks, while Alicia Pickett had four.

Newman (0-21, 0-11 MIAA) was led by Trinity Conley who had 14 kills, while Raegen Roth had 38 assists and 12 digs.

Southern led for much of the first set, and led 22-18 late, forcing a Newman timeout. The Jets, however, came out of the timeout to tie the set at 22 and then again at 23, before going up 24-23 to force a Southern timeout. The Lions tied the set at 24, but the Jets scored the final two points to take and early 1-0 lead.

Set two saw two tied scores and two lead changes, but a 5-1 run late by the Lions put Southern up 22-17 and forced a timeout for the Jets. The Lions would hold on to take the set.

Southern utilized a 10-0 run late in the third set to pull away. Trailing 21-13, Nash served out ten-straight points to put the Lions up 23-21, forcing two timeouts for the Jets during the run. Newman stopped the run and got within one (23-22), but the Lions held on to win.

Despite there being three ties and three lead changes in the fourth set, they were all in the first eight points. The Lions broke a 3-3 tie early on and never trailed from there on out.

Southern will be on the road this weekend at No. 14 Northwest Missouri on Friday and No. 10 Central Missouri on Saturday.

MSSU soccer loses to Fort Hays State 3-0

Hays, Kan. - The Missouri Southern soccer squad fell to the Fort Hays State Tigers by a final score of 3-0 inside the FHSU Soccer Field Sunday afternoon.

Junior forward Sarah Tatum, junior midfielder Carina Calderon, sophomore forward Bailey Belcher, and freshman defender Ashton Manwill each provided a shot on the day for the Lions (2-11-1, 1-5-1 MIAA). The Tigers (8-3-1, 4-1-1 MIAA) led at halftime 1-0 and then added two more goals in the second period in the win.

Freshman goalkeeper Riley Laver saw 24 total shots with 12 coming towards the goal. She made nine saves in 90 minutes played in-between the posts.

Missouri Southern returns home for a pair of MIAA matches against Emporia State on Friday at 6:00 pm and then Washburn on Sunday at 1:00 pm.

Annual MOSO Madness set at Missouri Southern

MOSO Madness is upon us! Fans can get a sneak peak at the 2019-20 editions of the Missouri Southern men's and women's basketball teams as well as pick up season tickets as the annual event will be held this Wednesday night.

The event will kick off at 7 pm with check-in and season-ticket pickup for fans with free hot dogs and drinks for everyone in attendance.

There will be two mini-scrimmages between attendees of the Little Lion Academy from 7:10 pm to 7:30 pm, before the introduction of the women's basketball team and their scrimmage at 7:35 pm. The women will have a 20-minute running clock while the Southern men will be signing autographs on posters during the action.

At 8 pm, there will be a three-point contest with shooters from each team taking part in a tandem contest with representation from both the men and women competing as a team against another team.

After the three-point contest, the Southern men will have their scrimmage consisting of a 20-minute running clock beginning at 8:15 pm. The Southern women will be signing autographs while the men are scrimaging.

The event should end around 8:45 pm and be a great opportunity to come out and see the Missouri Southern basketball teams in action prior to the start of their seasons.
