MSSU baseball falls to Emporia State 11-5

Emporia, Kan. -- The 11th-ranked Missouri Southern baseball team got a pair of home runs from Ryan Hunter, but nine early runs for Emporia State lifted the Hornets over the Lions 11-5 today in the series finale against the Hornets.

The Lions (23-8, 14-4 MIAA) were led offensively from Hunter's big day as he went 2-for-3 with two home runs, four RBIs and two runs scored. Dexter Swims went 3-for-5, while Freddie Landers, Matt Miller and Mike Million had a hit each. Landers had a home run, while Miller and Million scored a run each.

Will Bausinger started and allowed three earned runs, but fell to 4-2 on the season. River Wright, Cole Woods, Bradly Hershey, Austin DesRoche, Joey Reeves and Logan VanWey threw in relief.

ESU (18-11, 11-6 MIAA) had two hits from three different individuals, while Ryan Krolikowski drove in three.








The Hornets picked up three runs over the first two innings before Hunter's first home run made it 3-1 going to the bottom of the third. ESU, however, scored six runs to go up 9-1 after three.

Hunter and Landers homered in the fourth and fifth innings to get the Lions back within four (9-5), but Southern couldn't get any closer.

The Lions will be back in action this week as Southern plays host to No. 21 Central Missouri in a crucial MIAA matchup between two of the top three teams in the MIAA standings.

MSSU softball drops doubleheader to Emporia State

Emporia, Kan. - The Missouri Southern softball team fell to Emporia State in both games of a doubleheader by scores of 4-3 in game one and 6-0 in game two inside the Trusler Softball Complex Monday afternoon.

Game One

The Lions (12-17, 3-9 MIAA) tied the game up at 3-3 after Sidnie Hurst delivered a single up the middle to score two runs in the top of the fifth. Erika Lutgen knocked in the first run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth to cut the deficit to two.

ESU (12-17, 6-4 MIAA) held a 3-0 lead, scoring all its runs in the bottom of the second before the Lions battled back in the fifth.








Each team tried to break the tie in the sixth and seventh innings, but neither scored which forced the game into extras as the Hornets with two outs and a runner on second scored the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

Lexi Ferrari and Josie Tofpi each went 2-for-4 at the plate, including a triple and a run scored from Tofpi.

Game Two

The Hornets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and then added one in the third and fourth for a 3-0 advantage entering the fifth. They then capped off their scoring with a three-run home run in the fifth toward a 6-0 win.

Mikaila Leonhart, Emily Harris, Ashley Cadarella, and Lutgen each provided a hit for the Lions in the loss.

Softball returns home for a MIAA doubleheader against Southwest Baptist on Wednesday beginning at 3:00 pm.

MSSU's Kylie Carnes tied for seventh after first day of Henderson State Spring Invite

Mountain Home, Ark. -- Missouri Southern Golfer Kylie Carnes is in a tie for 7th after day one of the 2019 Henderson State Spring Invite hosted at Big Creek Country Club.

Carnes posted a round one total of one-over par (73) and followed that up with a 76 in round two to finish day one at 149 and tied for 7th. The Lions, as a team, had a great second round, improving their team total by 16 strokes going from a 370 in round one to a 354 in round two.

Maggie Moore is in 53rd after two rounds with a 169, while Elizabeth Poe is in 63rd with a 191. Taylor Boyett finished the day in 64th with a 215.








Henderson State leads the team totals and is in front of second-place Texas A&M - Commerce by two strokes. Missouri Western is third, followed by Central Oklahoma, Southern Nazarene, Northeastern State, Oklahoma Baptist, Lindenwood, Drury, Southern Arkansas, Northwestern Oklahoma and the Lions to round out the team scores.

The teams will play one final round of 18 tomorrow to conclude the tournament.
