MSSU men fall to Nebraska-Kearney 113-100

The Missouri Southern men's basketball team posed a furious second-half comeback, but could not overcome a hot-shooting Nebraska-Kearney team as the Lions fell 113-100 tonight on the road against the Lopers.

Southern (8-5, 5-2 MIAA) was led in scoring by Taevaunn Prince as the senior tied a career-high with 38 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, going 12-17 from the field and 13-14 from the free throw line. Austin Wright scored 17 points, while Charlie Brown had 11 and Isaac Kreuer scored ten. Wright had three long-balls and is now just one three-pointer from tying Jason Adams for second-place all-time in career three's.

UNK (6-5, 3-3 MIAA) had three score in double-figures as Trey Lansman scored 25 points, while Lane Rohrich and Connor Beranek had 24 points each.

A three pointer from Wright with 14:59 left in the first half gave the Lions a 9-8 lead, but UNK went on a 4-0 run to go up 15-11 and the Lopers would not give up the lead.

UNK led 33-16 with 7:20 to go in the first half and led 58-33 at the break.

The Lopers pushed their lead to 30 (74-44) with 14:33 left to go, but the Lions slowly started to chip away at the advantage. A layup from Blaine Miller with 11:24 left capped a 17-8 MSSU run and made the score 82-61. Kearney led by 21 (89-68) with 8:53 left to go in the game and the Lions went on a 19-8 run over the next four minutes and cut the lead to 11 (98-87) after a jumper on the baseline from Wright.

A layup from DJ Feitl with 2:08 to go cut the advantage to ten (105-95) and a three pointer from Andrew Ballock with five seconds left provided the final tally. It was Ballock's first career points.

The Lions shot 67 percent in the second half from the field and 50 percent from the three-point line, turning in a 59 percent mark from the field for the game, and shooting 83 percent from the free throw line.

However, UNK shot 63 percent from the field in the game and 56 percent from long-range, while adding an 83 percent showing at the charity stripe.

Southern held a 40-34 advantage in the paint and out rebounded UNK 30-21, including a 9-3 advantage on the offensive boards, leading to a 12-2 lead for the Lions in second-chance points.

The road doesn't get any easier for the Lions as Southern will head south and take on Fort Hays State inside Gross Memorial Coliseum on Monday night. Tip off is slated for 7:30 pm.

MSSU women to play Nebraska-Kearney today

The Missouri Southern Women are looking to start 2016 with a bang as they travel to Nebraska-Kearney for a 5:30 p.m. contest Saturday at the Health & Sports Center/Buckle Court.

Last Time Out for the Lions
The Missouri Southern women's basketball team had an extremely cold shooting second half and the Lions fell 64-42 today to visiting Washburn on Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. Southern (9-3, 3-3 MIAA) was led offensively by Sharese Jones as she scored 15 points and added six rebounds.Deb Holcomb scored 12 points. Bri Shavers, Kayla Kivinski and Desirea Buerge scored four points each. Washburn (5-4, 3-2 MIAA) had three score in double-figures, led by 13 points from Julie Ravn. Jayna Smith had a team-high 13 rebounds. The Lions scored the game's first five points as Morice hit a layup and Jones nailed a three pointer. Washburn went ahead 8-7, however, after a three from Erin Dohnalek with 5:24 left to go in the quarter. Southern tied the score at ten after a pair of free throws from Jones, but the Ichabods hit a three as time expired in the quarter to lead 13-10 after one. Back-to-back threes from Holcomb to start the second quarter put Southern up 16-13 and a layup from Shavers with just over 7:00 to go put the Lions up 20-15. A three from Jones with 3:50 to go in the half put the Lions up 23-19 and a put back from Jones the next trip down gave Southern a six-point lead (25-19). A pair of free throws for the Ichabods tied the score at 25, but two freebies for Holcomb gave the Lions a 27-25 lead at the break. Washburn opened up the third quarter on a 17-6 run and led 42-33 with a minute to go in the quarter. The Ichabods would lead 44-35 after three. The Ichabods' lead reached 15 (50-35) after a pair of free throws with 7:49 in the fourth quarter. The Lions' cold shooting continued, but a three from Desirea Buerge with 3:56 to go in the fourth made the score 57-42, Washburn. It was the first field goal for the Lions in 9:36. The Lions shot 24 percent from the field and 81 percent from the free throw line. Southern forced 17 turnovers and scored 16 points off of the miscues.

Last Time Out for UNK
The Central Missouri Jennies outscored Nebraska-Kearney 15-4 in the fourth quarter to post a 64-62 win Saturday afternoon in Warrensburg. UCM (3-7, 2-3) has now beaten UNK (5-6, 1-4) four straight times, three having been decided by seven points or less. The Lopers sunk 10 three pointers to lead for the first 38 minutes. Guards Laramey Becker (Trenton) and McKenzie Brown (Grand Island) each scored 20 as they were a combined 8 of 24 from behind the arc. Down by scores of 22-11, 41-29 and 55-41, UCM hung around thanks to 15 offensive rebounds, 22 bench points and a strong inside game. In the fourth quarter, UNK was 2 of 9 from the field, 0 of 2 at the line and committed nine of its 18 turnovers. The Lopers still had a chance to force overtime as UCM star and former UNL volleyball player Shelby Winkelmann made one of two free throws with 10 seconds left. However, Kearney never got a shot off. Winkelmann, who also is on the UCM volleyball team, went for a game-high 27 points by sinking 11 of 20 field goals. Going 5 of 9 at the line, the senior guard also had four rebounds and two steals. Off the bench, junior wing Ashley Duffy had 10 points, four defensive rebounds and three steals with Kansas State transfer Ashley Jones (nine points, eight rebounds and three steals) close to a double double. The Jennies scored 38 of its points in the paint and its o-board work led to 14 second chance points. Making just one three, UCM was 17 of 22 at the line. UNK tallied 18 points off of 15 Central Missouri turnovers and made seven of its triples in the first half. Becker became the 24th women's player in school history to reach 1,000 career points as she came into the day with 995. In 38 minutes, she made seven freebies and five field goals while grabbing six rebounds and having a team-best four steals. Next, Brown made five threes to reach her point total and played a team-best 39 minutes. Finally, Arizona junior guard Alexa Hogberg had 10 points, four assists and two rebounds.

The Series
The Lions lead the series with the former CSIC opponent 17-13, including an 8-7 mark in Kearney, Neb. The Lions hold a 9-6 advantage when playing in Joplin and are 1-1 when playing UNK in The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. Since the joining of the NCAA D2 ranks Southern holds a 3-1 advantage over UNK. Southern has won five of the last six against the Lopers with two of those wins coming at UNK's Health & Sports Center/Buckle Court. The longest winning streak by either team is held by the Lions as they won seven games from Jan. 29, 1983 through Feb. 1, 1986. UNK's longest winning streak was four games (twice) Jan. 29, 1977 thru Feb. 4, 1978 and Jan. 30, 1981 thru Feb. 19, 1982.

Last time vs. UNK
Kearney, Neb. - Missouri Southern (7-0, 1-0 MIAA) came away with a 92-64 victory Thursday night against the University of Nebraksa-Kearney Lopers (3-4, 0-1 MIAA).
The Lions shot the lights out of the Health & Sports Center going 36-62 from the field for 58.1 percent and 11-23, 47.8 percent from three point range.
Southern would get off to a quick start as the Camila Lacerdadrained a three pointer on the Lions first possession. The Lopers and Southern would trade buckets until the 15:55 mark when Alexa Hogberg hit a three pointer to give the Lopers an 11-8 lead during a 10-0 run for UNK. Jolee Sharp hit her first three of the game and start an 8-0 run for the Lions as Southern pulled within one at 16-15 with 10:12 to play. A three pointer from Jensen Maydew would give the Lions the lead for good in the first half as the Lions closed the half on a 12-3 run.
Sharese Jones and Nic Hartzog led the way for the Lions in the first half as they each scored 11 points. Jones, Hartzog, and Lacerda all pulled down three boards each to lead Southern.
Lacerda started the second half just like the first as she connected from downtown on the Lions first possession to expand the lead to 11, at 42-31. Southern never looked back as UNK would get within 12 on a pair of free throws by Laramey Lewis before the Lions would go on a 8-2 run to give the Lions a 19 point advantage at 62-43 on a pair of free throws from Maydew with 11:43 to play.
The Southern lead would not get below 20 from the 8:58 mark to play as Tami Morice put in a layup to give the Lions a 70-48 lead.
Jones had a season high 25 points, while Lacerda and Maydew added career highs with 14 and 12 points respectively. Maydew led the way on the boards with six and Jones had four.

MSSU men's basketball returns to action tonight

The Missouri Southern men's basketball team will open up the new year with a road trip as the Lions will take on Nebraska-Kearney this Saturday. Tip off from the Health and Sports Center is slated for 7:30 pm.

The Series

Nebraska-Kearney leads the all-time series 19-12 between the two schools, but the Lions have won three out of the last four, including two wins in the MIAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons. Southern is 8-7 at home, 2-12 on the road and 2-0 in neutral site games.The Lions have won three of the last four, but UNK had won six in a row previously, with all but one being played when the Lions were still a member of the NAIA. Southern defeated UNK 87-79 in the MIAA Tournament last season.

Taevaunn Amongst The Nation's Best

Taevaunn Prince leads the country in free throws attempted and made, while ranking second in defensive rebounds per game. He ranks fourth in total rebounds and fifth in total points, while ranking ninth and tenth in rebounds and points per game. He also ranks 11th in double-doubles, whiel ranking 14th in total field goals, 32nd in total minutes, and 43rd in field goal percentage.

NCAA Individual Stat Leaders

Taevaunn Prince isn't the only Lion that is amongst the National Leaders. Austin Wright ranks 48th in minutes per game, 25th in total minutes and 50th in total three pointers made.

NCAA Team Stat Leaders

The Lions rank ninth in free throws made and 13th in free throws attempted. The team ranks 39th in three point shooting and 55th in free throw percentage.

MIAA Individual Leaders:

Prince leads the MIAA in defensive rebounds per game, double-doubles, free throws attempted and made rebounds per game, total field goals made and total rebounds. He ranks third in field goal percentage, second in points per game, and second in total minutes. Wright leads the league in total minutes, while ranking third in three point attempts, fourth in minutes per game, and total three pointers per game.

MIAA Team Stat Leaders

The Lions lead the MIAA in total three pointers made, as well as attempted and steals. Southern ranks second in steals per game, three point defense and total three pointers made per game, while ranking third in defensive rebounds and fourth in three point attempts, three pointers per game and three point field goal percentage.

Record Breakers

Senior shooting guard Austin Wright set two records for the Lions last year, including the single-season three point record (79) and the single game three-point record (9). He also owns the single-season three point percentage mark (.493) and is also the current career-leader in that category (.454).

Record Breakers II

Wright is climbing the charts in career three pointers made at MSSU. He moved into the top five last year and currently sits in third at 209 career treys, after passing Keith Allen. He needs 5 to pass Jason Adams for 2nd place and 16 to break Skyler Bowlin's record of 224.

Three Point Streak

The Lions failed to make a three-pointer at Arkansas Tech in their match-up in 2012-13. It was the first time in 403 games that Southern had failed to hit a three pointer, dating back to Jan. 20, 1999 against Missouri S&T. The Lions have had a three in 95-straight games since Arkansas Tech in 2012-13.

Taevaunn's On Fire

Taevaunn Prince is averaging 24.6 and 10.9 rebounds this season. He has led the Lions in rebounding every game but one, and in points in ten of 12.

Mr. 200

Austin Wright had seven three pointers against Central Oklahoma to give him 201 in his career. He currently has 209 and is 16 away from breaking the all-time record at MSSU.

Blocks By The 100

Greg Renfroe picked up his 100th career block this past week against Northeastern State. He currently has 106 and is nine away from tying Keane Thomann for fourth all-time in MSSU history. Renfroe had 62 blocks as a junior, second all-time in a single-season at MSSU.

20-Point Man

Taevaunn Prince has scored 20 points or more in every game but one this season.

Rebound This

Taevaunn Prince has set his career-high in rebounds in two separate games this year, tying the mark of 17 in two of the four games.

Season-Ending Injury

Southern swing man LJ Ross will sit out the 2015-16 season after pre-season knee surgery revealed more damage than thought.

Huge Fan Support

Missouri Southern ranks 11th nationally in average attendance with 1,689 fans per game coming to the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. The Lions rank 5th in total attendance with 13,266 fans this season. Southern ranks fourth in the MIAA in average attendance.

Sophomore Charlie Brown had a career-high 27 points in a win over St. Cloud State to start the season.

Lions In The D2 Basketball Writers Regional Poll

The Missouri Southern men's basketball program is ranked 4th in the Division II Media Week Six Central Region Poll. Central Missouri is eighth, while Northwest Missouri is ninth.
